Apint thinner is a weak solvent, plus automotive paints are xylene based. USe some xylene and a rag.
It MAY dull the tips, but you can polish them right up.

Listen to this guy.

Don't sand your tips since they're chrome. If they were polished, it'd be ok.

Of course Im right, I work at Sherwin-Williams.

The pros know.

You will need to put some elbow greas into it though. Automotive paint is pretty tough. If they got alot on it and its not coming off, try heating the tips FROM THE INSIDE (so you dont damage the finish) and see if you can get the paint hot enough to start craking and peeling. And please wait till they cool before you pour xylene on them. That would not be good.

If all else fails, use paint stripper. But use a weak one. I would suggest getting some Super Strip from your local S-W. Make sure you get the paste, its weaker so it wont damage the finish on the tips.

You could always try brake fluid. It'll take a bit of "sitting" time, but it'll take the paint right off.

FYI - An old modeler's trick:
Brake fluid is also a great way to remove paint from some types of plastic. The brake fluid attacks the paint without disolving the plastic. (always test first!)

I got some paint on one of my chrome rims and Goo-Be-Gone got it off. I would never even thought of sanding, that's nuts.
