How to replace axles??? Searched already

Did a search and couldn't find any info on how to change the axles.

I'm gettin a 5 lug setup and need to replace the axles but i have never messed with the rearend except changing the fluid. I need to know what all is involved and possibly what special tools if any are needed and estimated time for changing the axles.

If anyone has a writeup or link to one that would be sweet also.

I know i will need the following...

friction modifier
gear lube
rtv

Is there anything else i need to buy?

While your in there might as well do axle bearings also which arent expensive at all. But to do it you are prob. going to need a slide hammer and bearing puller which you can rent at autozone, should come out very easy with the slide hammer. Its not really a hard job to do so it shouldnt take that long but I cant give a exact time seeing as I dont even remember how long it took me. I thought it was a fun job though! BTW what 5 lug setup are you going with?

Pulling the axles is pretty easy. Here is how I did it when I rebuilt my trac lock.

1. Jack up rear of car and set it up on some jackstands
2. Pull off rear tires and brake drums
3. Pull cover off of rear end and drain fluid.
4. Turn axle until you can unbolt the pinion shaft bolt. Unbolt it and push the pinion shaft in a little. Rotate the axle again until you can grab ahold of the end of the pinion shaft that is sticking out. Pull out the pinion shaft. They can sometimes be rather tight coming out.
5. push in one axle, doesn't matter which side, and you will see the C clip. I was able to remove mine with some long needle nose pliers but I have seen other guys use the extendable magnets to pull them out.
6. Do the other axle the same way.
7. Put the new axle in the housing, you will probably have to rotate it to get the splines ont he axle to line up with the diff splines
8. slide the C clip into the groove on the end of the axle and then pull the axle back out and seat the c clip into the little pocket on the diff. Do the same for both sides.
9. Once both axles are in slide the pinion shaft back into place and INSTALL A NEW PINION SHAFT BOLT. I can't remember the torque specs
10. Put the differential cover back on with some black RTV, pull the fill plug and fill up the rear diff. and don't forget the friction modifier (unless your using some gear oil with the friction modifier already in it)
11. Put the brake drums and wheels back on the car and drop it down and your done.

Not to difficult I pulled my T lock, rebuilt it and reinstalled it in a little over an hour.

Don't get any of the old gear oil on you cause it smells like ass.

RYC CUKR----Where do i get a new pinion shaft bolt? Is it something i need to get from Ford or autozone or hardware store?

Thanks for the help and I seem to remember changing the rear end fluid and finding it almost impossible not getting COVERED in that stinky ****, I still have the pants i wore to do that in a bag so that i can wear them the next time lol.

I know that my Haynes manual only tells you how to check fluid and pull the whole rear assembly. Most of the manuals consider getting inside a rear end way to difficult for most do it yourselfers. None the less you are right there are alot of questions that folks could answer for themselves if they had a haynes or chilton's manual

The pinion shaft bolt is a ford only item. I cannot recall if you can buy just the bolt or if you have to buy the bolt and pinion shaft as a kit.

I was lucky that last time I pulled the diff. I only coated myself from my elbows to my hands in the nasty old diff fluid.

is this what i will have to do to remove the c clips so i can upgrade my brakes to the cobra ones?
