i am going to look at/purchase some used pi heads from a dude by me. i was just wondering if there are some markings i could look for to let me know for sure that they are actually pi heads. you never know sometimes with people and i would just like to be sure. anyone have any suggestions on what to look for? thank you

Square intake ports and a heart shaped chamber. NPI heads have a tear shaped intake port and a circular combustion chamber.

2003 mercury mountianeer heads should be fine right? they have the heart shaped chambers and all, but all the coolant passages and such will be good also?

Yes, other than valve cover bolt patterns everything should be fine. You definitely get a PI style intake manifold and cams as well. The manifold and cams rather than the heads are where the majority of power from a PI swap comes from.
