How to tell?

I just bought a 92 GT and and eas told it had guite a few mods done to it. But looking at it, I can't see alot that has been done. I know some of the mods are real(aluminum d/s, short throw shifter, gears,headers,catless exhaust w/ X-pipe and clutch), but was also told it had t/b,MAF,roller rockers, and ported polished u/l intakes. I would like to know if there is an easy way to identifty what size the t/b and MAF are. I know I have to pull valve covers to see if it has r/r(at least I'm pretty sure lol). Also is there an easy way to tell if the intakes are not stock(as in Explorer). Thank you for any help.

The TB/EGR and MAF meter will have an indication on them as to what brand they are, and possibly even a size. Ford did make aftermarket TBs, but they are kind of rare these days, so if it says "Ford" on it, its probably stock.

You could always pop the intake tube off to measure the TB opening with a ruler or something. Same goes for the MAF meter.

If it has a ported stock intake manifold, there would be no way of telling without taking it apart. Same goes for RRs, you'd need to take off the valve covers.

They both are Ford parts so they are probably stock. But why would someone p/p intakes and put in r/r's just to leave the t/b stock? Do the stock t/b's flow good enough to leave them stock or are the stock intakes so crappy that you don't need to change the stock t/b. Looks like a j/y run is in the near future. Now to pull the valve covers and see how much lying was done lol.

Nah, the stock TB is pretty weak, but a lot of people overlook it because of budget issues or for other reasons. IF the intake IS really P/P, I'd bet that he did it himself on a budget, and just didn't have money to upgrade the TB.

The Explorer TB was a 65mm unit IIRC, and some people upgrade to one of those. But I can't see why he'd have an Explorer TB without an Explorer intake. So I'm still guessing its a stock Mustang TB.

Obviously I am a noob, but what size is the stock mustang t/b. And from what I was "told", he was a Ford mechanic, so he probably did do it himself(if it was done). The story was, he had it ready to be a stoker motor, but got his job got shipped out of state, so he didn't get to finish it. This really sucks, because I would like to mildly build this engine, but don't want to purchase items that are already there. Thanks for the help, I'm starting to figure this out.

I would bet my next three paychecks you have a completely stock motor. if anything and this is a long stretch he port matched the intake to the gaskets.

58mm in '86 and 60mm '87-up.

I'm NOT gonna take that bet.I'm thinking that he WAS planning on builing the motor, but never got that far, because it does have a h/d clutch,aluminum d/s, shifter and gears. Which is fine, I'll build it myself.

if you can yank the top end off a v8 explorer you can prolly add about 65 ponies to your otherwise stock motor.

I've been reading alot on here and that was pretty much what I was planning. Do I leave the stock t/b and MAF, or do I buy a CAI and use the explorer t/b? Thanks for answereing all my question. I might not be young , but I'm still a noob(for now). Been dreamin about gettin one of these for..... awhile.

the exploder TB is 65 mm, almost 10mm larger than the stocker. I would go with the sn95 maf as it is larger than your stock part and will flow more air.

Thanks again for the info. My list is growing by the minute. This will all bolt right on to a 92 GT with out much hassle. Can I do this all in my garage on a weekend? I'm not a mechanic, but I can turn a wrench when I have to.This will still be my DD, but work is only 20miles away on back roads.

I would give yourself two weekends just to allow for any minor complications. or if you have a four day weekend you could easily knock it out. I know that everytime I do a project like that I have to make at least 6 trips to the parts/hardware store to pick up things I have lost/broke.

Haha. Aint that the truth. Iguess I'll put ins. on the old F150 for a month and use it, while I tinker. I found a 97 explorer set-uo w/injectors and all, for $250, does that sound like a fair price?
