how wide of a back tire?

can i get on a 17x8" rim? i have 245/45/17 now i want something wider.. thanks

Just depends on what you are after. If you look at the specs on any tire manufacturer's website or even www.tirerack.com, they all say no wider than a 255 on a 17x8 inch rim. If you want something wider, I would look at upgrading to 9 inch or wider rims in the rear. While you may be able to fit something wider on the stock rim as some are bound to suggest, the tire will not perform as the manufacturer designed it to.

Yup. I hear it coming... "I have 275s on my 17x8 and haven't had any problems yet".

I'd rather spend a little more and do it right, than go against the manufacturer's specs.

I was told by discounttire.com I could run 265's on an 8 inch rim. That is what I have had on there for two months and havent had any problems.

I wouldn't go any wider than a 265 if so go with a wider wheel.

I have had 275/40/ZR17 on my stock rims for 4 years no problems no abnormal wear also had a firebird with aftermarket rims 17x8 No problems for years i would go with 275 no problem maybe a little rub up front but nothing major

I like the discussions on these topics. I run 275's, no problems. So now you have the manufacturer's recommended size, discounttire.com's recommended size and the average joe's recommended size. All different.

So he was asking how wide of a tire will fit. I'm pretty sure 275's are as wide as can actually fit on the stockers. Now as far as Ford's recommendations, that's a different story, and good to know. My point is, Ford probably doesn't recommend nitrous or 75mm TB's or gas pedal spacers, but it can be done and doesn't mean that your car will explode. Same with 275's, doesn't mean your tires are gonna fall off.
BTW I do plan on doing the gas pedal mod and i bought a predator after checking out your posts and car-domain site, so i'm not trying to say not to listen to your advice. Just trying to confuse the kid with different opinions.

confusing is right.. but i have some time.. i wont be buying untill the summer when i get back to working again so I will figure it out.. oh by the way I love my 17" wheels they are the stock on a 98 and I wanted the same ones just 17x10 so i could put on some 315s but they dont make them in 10" do they? i couldnt find them

The recommendations aren't Ford's, they are from the people who manufacture the tires. Go to any tire manufacturer's web site and look for yourself. Tires are not a one size fits all deal. There is a reason they make them in different sizes. There is also a reason they make the size recommendations. Your logic that nothing has happened to you so it must be OK is troubling. It is one thing to do it on your own car but, to push others who are not sure for themselves to do it is what I have a real problem with.

Here are a couple of examples.

Nitto which most will agree run narrow recommend no wider than 255 on a 17x8.

Fact is pretty much every tire manufacturer is gonna say the same thing.

Which rims do you have? You can get almost anything out there. If you can't find your rims in a 17x10 you could have them widened. There are a lot of companies that do it. It would probably be less expensive though to buy a new set. I am kind of partial to the 17x9/17x10.5 Bullitt deep dish myself.
