How'd you learn to work on cars?

I learned from my Dad and :SNSign: how to work on cars. Then I bought my dirt race car and that teaches you ALOT. When I blew the rod bearings on my race motor I took it apart piece by piece by myself just to see how it all fit together.

Also, I worked on my buddies' race car before I bought one and his Dad taught me alot. So basically I've learned from the Dads and trial and error.

Stuff broke, and so am I... I had a '67 and never really did any work on it myself because my Step dad was always there to help (ie do it for me).

Now that I live on my own, when stuff goes bad and because I am as broke as my car, I figure out how to fix it on the cheap when possible. I still won't do major stuff since it's my DD but if I had a garage I'd probly be all up in the motor.

I had it the easy the way. Mainly I broke other people's stuff until I figured it out.

Also, my three uncles had me covered. One was a machinist and performance engine builder, another a body and paint guru, and the third an all around do everything great mechanic. I apprenticed with two. I do not like body work, so my cousin got the body work one.

I learned from my oldest brother. He is a mechanic & restores muscle cars as a hobby. I can remeber being 8 years old and helping hang an exhaust system on a 1970 Challenger T/A he built for his brother in law. It was a total basket case and was a beauty when he finished it. The dumbass brother in law had it 2 weeks & destroyed it.....Racing one of my other brothers ('71 Mach1 also built by our oldest brother).

I've been hooked ever since.
