Howl/grinding sound - what is it?

I posted this a few months ago but didnt get much help.

When i drive my car there is this grinding sound in the rear end when I am driving. Its hard to describe it but I am going to say its like a howl, like its echoing somewhere. It sounds like it may be in the wheelwell or the rear axle. I put it on a lift and rotated the tires and didnt hear anything. I also turned both rear rotors, didnt fix the problem. I fear its inside the axle. It is not a constant grind but sounds like something is hitting one certain spot during each revolution. Sound speeds up (a little) at higher speeds. Has anyone had this problem or know what it may be? I will be replacing gears shortly, should this problem be taken care of with that? When i get back I will have the mechanic check it out and hopefully he can tell me what it is.

Thanks for all your help :nice:

Sort of like a 'whoomp whoop whoomp' sound? It is a bad carrier bearing. Get all the bearings (carrier, pinion, and wheel) changed at the same time as you get your gears swap. Most shops won't charge anymore labor since they have the rearend torn down anyway. How long before you plan on doing the gear swap?

ill be home in june and august. wont have time in june so ill have to get the gears done in august. It hasnt been driven for about 10 months so its not doing any damage. I will be home in 10 days and i will drive it a little bit then, but not too hard. BTW, its been doing this for as long as ive owned it (10,000 miles) but nobody has been able to diagnose it.

I bought the install kit with my gears including bearings and all that stuff, so this should take care of it?

That should do it. Mine was making the same noise too when I bought it but I couldn't figure out what it was and it wasn't too bad at first. Of couse the used warrenty ran out after 3k miles so I was sol. Fortunatly I had the gears done too so if I did have it done under warrenty, I would still be running with 3.27's so I'm kinda glad I waited.
