Hi guys, I am new to the 5.0 but I am a capable engine builder. I have built alot of motors just not a Ford. So I picked my favorite Mustang (Fox) which had the motor I always heard glistening with life in highschool (302 5.0) I am going to build a stroker shortblock this winter just to familarize myself with the 5.0 engine. I have a list of the mods on my current powerplant in the car. Any thanks if you guys could estimate the hp. I will be installing a 4.10 gear asap and having some valve body work done to the AOD. Here are the current mods.

302 bored .30 over Ross Pistons
GT40 heads with bowl work and stage 2 porting
FM B303 cam
Cobra Intake, ported and matched to the heads
BBK phenobolic spacer
BBK cold air
Edelbrock 70mm TB
FM maf
FM Dizzy
FM 9mm wires
March underdrive pullies
Electric fan
Gear drive timing set (noisy)
BBK Billet FPR
Holley Fuel pump
BBK full length headers
Mac off road H pipe
Flows

I have an idea of what it should produce, but again I am not a expert on these engines and may be off, tell me what you guys think.

Good deal, that was what I was thinking, it pulls like a mad dog over 3000rpm's. I am going to install the gear and do the the tranny mods asap. After that it should get up and go pretty well.

280RWHP/310RWTQ For as many bolt ons as you have, the GT40 heads (even ported) and AOD are still going to hold you back from cracking the 300RWHP mark IMO.

I thought the Gt40's good heads but have seen they are not the best choice for high hp cars. Is there a junkyard head with good numbers or do you have to go with eddy or afr heads to put up nice numbers? And I am modding the aod, what other tranny do you suggest?

T-5 with astro performance warehouse gearset. That's if you want 5 spd. For aod I have heard getting a 2 inch wide OD band helps lengthen the life of it with some power.

i agree with gearbanger. put a 5 speed in the car and i'd put you pretty close the the 300 mark.

Don't get me wrong, the GT40's are a good entry level head, but to really move the amount of air, at the kind of velocities you want for those power levels, there's no substitute for a good set of aftermarket aluminum heads. Not to mention the aluminum castings will allow for a little more timing than the iron units, which will help more still.

If it were my money to spend, a set of AFT 165/185's would be cat's meow. I like the Edelbrocks too, but have seen in person 50/50 results as far as their quality is concerned. This was on their earlier Performer and Performer RPM castings though, so perhaps they're built to a higher standard now. Trick Flow's are nice as well, with the accompanying valve train. And I’d top it all off with a Trick Flow intake and call it a day.

A T5, or a 3550 5-speed will put more power to the wheels than an AOD would if you're looking for maximum dyno figures but that's not to say your should be overly concerned with numbers. A well built AOD car with a loose converter and the right rear gear out back will put a hurting on most stick car guys at the track.

Thanks for the words of wisdom guys. I am going to stay with the AOD, I really like an auto tranny if it is built right, especially at the track where they are much more consistent. I may look heavily into the aluminum head market next year after I finish the lower end of my stroker. And the gear drive is not as noisy as I thought it would be,don't get me wrong, you know it's there, but I have heard lowder versions.
