Here the scoop. I changed the oil in the car today. I measured that it was 2 qts low. I put new oil and a filter in it. I took the car for a 10 minute drive. I got into the boost a few times but not hard (the roads were wet so I didnt want to go to crazy and get in an accident). I got back to the garage and there was oil coming out of the TB and slightly around the top plate on the intake (bbk ssi). I know what it was instantly, I pulled the top plate off the intake and it was full of oil. I don't mean damp with oil, I MEAN IT LOOKS LIKE I POURED 1 QUART OF OIL IN THE INTAKE!!!! Pulled the dipstick, sure enough down about a quart to a quart and a half. WTF!

The car didn't run all that bad for as much oil that had entered the intakeand remember this was only a ten minute cruise. So now I am thinking blowby, but if so this is so much blowby that the car should be running like ass. It ran decent but it definately felt a little flat. So tell me what you guys think!

Here are the specs on my problem:
-BBK SSI intake
-Oil separater (but it wasn't full like the intake, I know this sounds wierd for pumping over a quart of oil into the intake in ten minutes)
-only got upto about 5lbs of boost
-only ran up to about 5000rpms max (I didn't beat on the car too hard, it was raining)

So I am thinking that I have either the worst case of blow by in history, or for some reason my pcv/oil seperater setup is pumping/pulling large amounts of oil into intake. What do you think!

I am going to do a compression test tommorrow if I have time. This motor only has about 1000miles since I finished it, I don't want to here I have bad or a broke ring/rings.

F*** Me, this SUCKS!

sounds like your pcv may be bad or by looking at my lower it may be at to much of an angle so the pcv doesn,t close/open probaly, also check to see if you have crankcase breather filter/ the metal like breather that goes under neath the grommet it helps restrict the oil from escaping from the pcv.

i have heard that the early sc thunderbird have a pcv that works well will boost, i believe read some where on this site.

Good Luck,

I hope your problem isn't that serious Tom.

sorry to hear it, bud. with all that oil, i'm surprised you don't have a huge cloud of smoke behind you.

do you still lose alot if you keep it out of boost?

i have pretty bad blow by too (1 quart per 200 miles), but my motor has 110K on it.

good luck with it and keep us posted.

Didnt you just rebuild that bottom end????

Did you give it time/drive it to get the rings to seat? I know with the ring tech today they have the cyl. wall prep and ring setups down to almost a instant seat or so I hear. I still would run it without the charger just alittle to make sure though.

Just did the compression test! 165-170 across the board. So I guess thats good news. Still don't have an answer but at least that eliminated. Now I know I didn't do a leak down test but if I had that severe of blow by to lose that much oil I would say that I would show up on the compression gauge. Also the cylinders bled off pressure all about the same rate on the compression gauge.

So your getting oil in the intake? If you werent running an intercooler I would say check your blower to see if leaking oil and letting it all into the intake but i doubt it would be able to get by the front mount.

My exact thoughts. But I'd bet it would be worth checking anyway.

It`s probably that SSI intake.Others are having the same problem.
One guy in a post said he thinks the problem has to do with a baffle under the PCV having a gap that lets too much oil to get sucked up.

Do a search, these intakes have had serious quality control issues.

You can still have cracked rings and have good compression on a test. You need to do a leak down test. That will tell you if and where you have broken rings. Thats definitely a lot of oil to be sucking over in such a short time. Check the intake and do a leak down test.

Its not the blower for sure. The paxton vr-4 is a self-contained unit, it runs on ATF so I know its not that.

I don't know much about the leak down test. What equip. do I need, were can I get it, and how do you do it.

Good point. You could have oil puddled on the pistons causing it to appear the rings are fine via the compression test.

Ive never done a leak down test so i have no idea how to do it, but i am curious to find out... So someone knowledgable post up

I hope its something simple like the PCV valve!

Do you have a stock style PCV valve or the one from the turbocoupes?

leak down is easy, although you need an air supply

you need the leak down tester, the piston you are testing to be at tdc on compression stroke, shoot into the cylinder through the tester, and it measures how much air gets past the rings. simple as that. oooooorrrrr

take it to a shop and make them do it.... even simpler

wow, i hope its not what was said about the intake...that would be expensive.

i am just amazed that the oil catch wouldent get filled up.......

I dont know about those intakes, BUT the only way i could see oil getting into the intake is throug the pcv....

are you running an additional check valve, because i know i ended up using a check valve and a pcv so as boost wouldent enter the crankcase......mine still works great, and im not running a catch can.

I use a autozone breather on the valvecover nipple and a setup like i described above for my pcv.

Yeah, stock PCV. I think I will get one for a turbo coupe tommorrow. What do you guys think about doing away with the PCV altogether?

I'm curious about this also? what are the implications of plugging off of the PCV simply for testing purposes (another ten minute drive?)

I could see the oil separater not filling if 1. the filter is removed from the t-connector or if the velocity was such that it was blown by at a speed that it wouldn't have a chance to drop down...that'd be severe blow-by wouldn't it?

my money is on the leakdown test....

Tom, arn't those new valve covers? do they have a baffle in them? A friend of mine had a similar problem and found that the pvc was right over the top of a pushrod and it was squirting oil right into it and making a damn mess of oil in the intake. Just somthing to check.

Leakdown test is worthless. It isn't going to tell you if oil is getting into your intake. It is going to tell you if you are burning lots of oil. If the oil made it past the rings into the cylinders i'm pretty sure it would burn off pretty quickly. Plus you said the car isn't running like ass. You would see plenty of smoke behind you if there was a problem with the rings.

I'd look into the Intake manifold and the PCV system.
