ok..I have a 1966 Mustang coupe with a small block V8 hooked to an original 3 speed. The shifter was getting very sloppy so I got the Hurst Master shifter and install kit for the 3 speed. Everything hooked up great, did the rod adjustment thru the side plates..etc. BUt if you shift with any speed, it hangs up out of first and will not go into second. You have to jiggle the shifter or place it back into first to start the shift pattern again. Now if you shift slowly, and precisly, going thru the pattern, it shifts smooth, but you cannot hurry it in any way. Any Ideas or do you think the problem is in the tranny and it might need a rebuild? When it hangs going for second it is like it hits a wall and is stuck untill you back off the pressure and get it back into the neutral position or in low gear gaer. There is no grinding unless ur jerking around and hit reverse or going to fast to get it back into low gear.

Any info?

The blocker rings could also be bad causing this problem. These are commonly referred to as the syncronizer rings. These are replacable brass rings but there are also corrosponding teeth cut into the gears themselves that the shifter rings slide onto. If these are gone or worn to rounded off shapes, the only solution is to change the gears.

On my '66 289, my factory 3 speed shifter did the same exact thing. Was going to replace it when I decided to try some adjusting. I found the shifter was not pulling first completely to the neutral position before trying to place second gear into position. Adjusted the first gear rod about 1/4" and speed shifts are great now. Well, as best they can get with a good factory shifter.
