Hypertech Chip and EECIV Blues....

Ok fellas, how bout this one....

I pulled the Old hypertech Chip off the EECIV after the car had not been wanting to start for so long....

Now I just realized that the contacts in the chip itself were slightly corroded. Now I know that if you dont clean the film off the computer when you first INSTALL a chip for the first time, that it can wipe the memory of the eeprom and render your car STARTLESS, But could this also be true if you do the same while the contacts of the CHIP arent cleaned? Since I had installed this chip and removed it times before...(for testing purposes i assure you all) I wasnt really thinking about the contacts of the chip it self. Only those of the Computer.. What do you guys think of this?? could my memory be wiped? and my computer shot in the dark?

I havent been able to start the stang in more than 3 months... I need to fire it up again before I get the urge to sell it ....

not a fan of any generic chip that isnt dyno tuned to your car.....

I was not aware that the ROM (or PROM) in the EEC was an EPROM first of all. I believe that they are hard burned chips and cannot be erased or changed like an EPROM or by means other than being burned up or broken. I believe that's why aftermarket chips etc. are "piggy back". However, if it is infact an EPROM and you suspect that the program in it may be corrupt you can do two things to find out for sure. Swap in another computer and see if your car runs or go to a Ford dealer or some other source that has the hardware/software to verify your chip is unharmed. I've never heard of anyone actually reburning a stock computer or making changes to it. With all of the hype out there for aftermarket computers though (I've been looking into allot of those recently), I may have missed something.

i could see why FORD uses an EEPROM seeing as how its more difficult to program it. And why so many aftermarket CPUS use PROM chips FOR THAT reason. IM NOT 100% sure its an EEPROM chip but thats what I was brought to believe. But Im gonna test using another found from the junk yard(i know it doesnt help if its ruined anyway, but you just never know) and see how that goes... Ill let you fellas know.
