With gas prices what they are I am looking at building a 2.3L turbo but keeping my current motor setup. Not looking for a road racer but something that is fun to drive at about 200hp.

Is this setup feasible?

Rebuild stock 2.3L motor with DIS and DP head but install ARP rod and main bolts and forged pistons.

Use SVO or Turbo Coupe fuel injectors.

Turbo spec roller cam, multi keyway cam sprocket (Not a fan of adjustable cam sprockets; havent seen one yet that doesnt slip).

Stinger Performance BAMAFUEL tuneable ECU

Stock exhaust manifold and turbo (87 turbo coupe) for now but at least 2.5" downpipe and single exhaust.

What other throttle bodies can I use? I have seen Tiny Avenger sells a adapter to use a 94-95 throttle body but Im betting that probably wont fit my intake.

I can send the head to my dad in Florida as he has a professional port and polish business and he used to run a built 2.3L Pinto.

Will I need to get a bigger Mass air sensor?


I also have access to a complete 84 turbo 2.3L with no turbo and a 87 2.3L turbo with no manifolds.

I just had the TO3 turbo into shop for inspection and shop wants $600+ dollars to rebuild it. I thought that was a bit high.

Any constructive comments or suggestions would be appreciated. I have lots of experience with the old 79-81 carb turbos but this would be my first foray into EFI turbos.

Probably a question better posted to turboford...

If you're only shooting for 200 HP, you could keep pretty much stock everything. Not much sense in going to a bigger TB, although it would give you better throttle response (it's both a curse and a blessing). 94-95 5.0 TB's will bolt up to the manifold with a little drilling- it's not hard, don't need to buy an adapter.

Also why not a 3" DP and exhaust?
 
Going by the FAQ on Stinger's site the stock injectors and throttlebody wont support much more than 130hp.

I was thinking that I could run a bigger throttle body, run SVO or Turbo Coupe injectors and run the BAMAFUEL ECU.

Im not opposed to 3" downpipe and exhaust but I feel that will be a later mod to cut initial costs. Ideally I would like the 3" downpipe and dual tailpipes.

Which reminds me, I wonder how hard it would be to add a Megajolt computer to control the distributorless ignition system.
 
I am looking at the green top injectors from the Turbo Coupe motor. What are chances these will still be in good shape? What is failure rate of injectors? Can injectors be rebuilt?

Looked at new injectors from NAPA and they want $94 to $135 per injector. After recovering from the shock I decided I wont be buying new injectors if at all possible.

Also I was told that the injectors will be EV-1 or EV-6 plug styles, which one does the 91 use? which one does the Turbo Coupe use? I was also told that EV-1 will plug into EV-6 but EV-6 wont plug into EV-1 without shortening the plug.

Ergo will the green top Turbo Coupe injectors plug into the stock 91 injector harness and rail?
 
Couple things to keep in mind here.

First off, green tops are 30 lb injectors and will only work with the small VAM. Brown tops are 35's and work with the big VAM and LA3 and all that.

Also, turbo engine injectors are low impedance and n/a injectors are high impedance. More than likely, everything interchanges and plugs in, but I don't know how the high vs. low difference affects the wiring.
 
I will be using these more than likely with the BAMAFUEL ECU so it wont be just throwing 30lb injectors into a 19lb system.

Some of my friends are trying to get me to go the Superchips route.

This motor is planned to be basically a 87 Turbo Coupe exhaust manifold, stock T3 turbo, stock 91 motor with forged pistons and intake with 30lb injectors, and ported and polished head.

All controlled by BAMAFUEL or a Superchip.

My dad will be porting and polishing the head, I will be paying shpping and whatever parts I need for head.

I figure Im gonna have to go with the 3" downpipe and exhaust. Stock 2.3L will choke the turbo to death.
