I can't get the PS pulley off!

I am in the process of changing Power steering pumps, and I can't get the stock pulley off. I tried to loosen the allen bolt in the middleof the pulley but it won't budge, and I've already twisted an allen wrench trying. Does it thread in the opposite way maybe? Do I have to remove that bolt before the pulley comes off? Because in my Hayne's manual it just says get a pulley puller, and dosen't mention this bolt at all. Any ideas guys?

You need to use a pulley puller. The puller threads into the threads of the pulley shaft and yanks the pulley off as your tighten the puller down. Its the only way

So I do have to take the bolt that is in the power steering pump shaft out? Does it thread like a normal bolt (lefty loosy)?

someone else provide some more info on this, im in india trying to remmeber this crap from back in the day.im pretty sure you have to take it out, with the belt on so the pulley cant move. Yes righty tighty lefty loosey..anyone else?

well actually there is no bolt! what you are seeing is the shaft of the pump. It has a allen type keyway so you can hold it still if needed. you have to use a puller Cuz it is pressed on. There isn't anything holding it on but pressere of the pully on the shaft!!!! I bought one from harbor freight but you could probably go to your local parts store,, not sure what is in your area but I went to autozone once and they pulled it for me, but they also rent the tool for free

here is what it looks like..

the way it works is you put the two pieces around the nub on the front of the pulley and the ring hold it all in place. then you tighten the supplied bolt and it pulls the pully up while pushing down in the cinter where you see the allen hole

BOWTIEKILLER is right on. i used the same puller he used (autozone loans the same one). also, unless yours is pristine, i recommend getting a new pulley. often times, after many miles and revolutions, the pulley hub gets pooey. it doesnt want to press back on. napa, for one, sells new pulley for around 10 bucks. had i known, i woulda done that instead of fighting my old pulley back on.

Since I was too cheap/lazy to buy a puller I improvised. I used a dremel and opened up one of the large holes in the pulley enough to remove the bolts. You don't have to take out much material and it's waaaay easier than fussing with that puller.

That's a good idea and will get the pump off but you still have to get the pulley off the pump and onto the new pump.

ps. The pulley puller mentioned above is for sale/loan at autozone, i just paid the $20 and bought it so i wouldnt have to take it back.

Well This might work out well then, because I am gonna put on a new pulley from a newer econo-van since its bigger, to get the underdrive effect, and because with my vortech, and the FMS A/C delete I have had a hell of a time fixing my belt clearance issues. So with this new pulley, and a 1993 cobra overdrive pulley I just picked up I should be able to fix my problem.

I am also going to put in a new PS pump since mine is shot, but I think I have to get the metal surrounding part off the old PS pump, and with the old pulley on there, I won't be able to pull the old plastic part of the PS pump. Does the new PS pump come with that round metal top part that the plastic pump mounts too, or do I have to get that old plastic pump part off of there.
I appreciate the help here guys!

A.J. you kinda lost me. you do have to remove the mounting bracket off the pump. do this once the assembly is off the car. IIRC, three bolts hold it on. air gun is nice. other than that (and aforementioned pulley), no other parts have to be canibalized from the old pump.
new pump should come with the plastic filler neck, etc.

Some pumps come without the bottle, buy one with it already on it and save the installation time.

Well I borrowed that puller from autozone, and that did the trick. I also got the new pump in, and it's nice not to have that old whinney pump in there anymore.

I did the same thing, low and behold it started whining again a week later
