I guess I'm not the only one who's had fuel gage prob's

I did a search and it looks like a pretty common problem with these cars, however it IS irritating

I have a '91 LX 5.0 Coupe. I love the car but the fuel gage only worked for maybe 6 months after I got the car (3 yrs). I always used the trip meter, but could hear something "clunking" in the tank when it got low. I figured it was the float that had come off, so I got a new sending unit and sure enough it was broken. Put the new one in and hooray, gas gage
hmmph, well it lasted a week...
it was clunking louder that ever so I decided to take it apart again. The new sending unit had come apart, but in a way that just didn't make sense. The sending unit clips together and had just come undone, nothing broken. WTF???
Looking inside I could see the anti slosh tank was out of place. Seems a PO had changed the fuel pump and missed the slosh tank when he put it in. That's the only thing I can think of...
Well, I used a bent coat hanger to fish it into place and got the pump into it. Put the sending unit back together and it's working good now

Should I be worried about the loose slosh tank?
It's been a few weeks since I did this and it seems to work fine.

yea i need a new sending unit myself. It should be fine floatin around in there haha. But one day when it gets low I would drop the tank and fish it out.

It's not the sending unit that's loose now. It's the anti slosh baffle. It just kind of sits around the fuel pump loosely. Didn't know if that was they way they all were.
