it all starts way back in 1998 with the introduction of the "All New" Volvo S80
Volvo decides it needs a trans to mount up to its brand new T6 (twin-turbo 2.8L inline 6) engine which was based on their existing 3.0L inline 6 previously used in 960s. problem is the 960 was RWD and the new and upcoming S80 is FWD. mounting an inline 6 transversly into a FWD car doesn't leave you with much room to work with. so for some weird, obscure unknown reason the Swedes decide to use a 4spd GM Hydramatic transmission.
fast forward to 2003 and the introduction of the All New XC90 SUV. engine choices are a 2.5L 5cyl turbo (FWD or AWD) with the tried and true AW55-50, or the T6 AWD with the, you guessed it, GM Hydramatic (4T65EV). Volvo has and still does use Aisin Warner 4, 5 and 6spd auto transmissions in all other models and some S80 and XC90 models
now normally i could care less as long as the bastards work fine. problem is these are THE worst things i have ever seen. AT LEAST twice a month someone in the shop is pulling one of these fxckers out for some sort of electrical (too many to list) and/or mechanical problems (too many to list) and some just decide to grenade themselves internally or chew up their own gears. just this month alone we've had 4 XC90's and 1 S80 in and (YEA for me!) i get one of each.
last week i had the S80 (extended warranty) and today i get an XC90 (extended warranty of course). so i get to spend my entire saturday pulling a transmission.
