I have an opportunity to open up my own performace store, do I go for it???

My godfather owns a glass business and it's going great for him. He decided to open up another location but it wasn't as successful as his main shop so he wanted to shut it down and rent out the space(it was open for a year). Roy, his son and my considered cousin, ran the business for this entire year and he knows how to work the numbers of a business. Roy told me about my godfather wanting to shut down the shop and I told him that my sole reason for going to college is to open up my own performance parts store. I started talking to him and since Roy is very into imports, we started talking about forming a partnership and running a performance parts store for imports and domestics. How does that sound? I know it takes a lot to run a business but I've got some college courses that would help me(my major is business management), and what better than my cousin and his dad knowing first hand how to run a legitimate business. What do you guys think? No one in S. Texas has a dyno, that's another option I'm really looking into. My godfather was excited when we told him about our idea and said he would remodel the whole place specifically for our store and be our lender whenever we needed money. What do you guys think? Should we go for it?

It sound like you have the know how and people (family) with the experiance to make it happen. Sound like you could also coner the market with a dyno in your arsenal. If you sale parts over the net you could give stangnet members a 10% discount and raise your sales

How is your credit? You will need a big loan to start the shop. Equipment, furnitiure, inventory, etc.

You should focus on the import side because there are so many dumb ricers who will pay way too much for crappy parts.

I don't know how much of a loan you will need, but my guess is $150k at least.

Back on topic....Do it! Isn't that what you are going to college for anyway?? You have the place, partner, backing to do it, not to mention possible customers here and experience from college so why not? The Auto parts business it tough, especially if you do performance, a lot of know it alls to deal with. Knowledge is only half the battle, having someone who can sit there and nicely shoot the breeze and bs with people helps too. We've had our shop 43 years and in the time I've been there I've seen other shops open up where they don't have the experience, but they have good bs'ers who get people swinging from their junk. But With internet and such, there's such a huge customer base that if you can afford to be competitive pricewise you can do alright. I say go for it, if it's an affordable venture there's more to potentially be gained than lost.

its hard to compete with summit/jegs, but if you have the knolege i'd prefer paying a little more to go to a little shop and chat with people that actually know about stuff, compared to a kragen/autozone

Thanks guys for all the replies. I think I'm going to go for it. I know imports will be a big part of our business since there's so many of those roaches around. We figured that since we'll be the new guys in town(well the only ones in that city) we'll have to start off by profiting a very minimum amount from our sales, who knows, maybe even losses. The thing here would be to create a nitch of customers and keep them.

The stangnet discount will definately be in effect but not sure on the free shipping, especially to CANADA.

I'm from La Blanca, TX, which is about 10 minutes north of Weslaco. You familiar? For the record, it's hot as sheet down here. We wake up to 85+ degree weather.

We just need to get to a lawyer and get everything down in writing just to be on the safe side. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just make sure you have install bays since the summits and jegs will eat a lot of your actual purchases. The shop by me is always so busy it is liek 6-8 weeks to get your car in during the racing season...

what kind of experience do you have in cars? you know how to rebuild an engine, trans and rear? if not you better get someone that can do all that stuff fast and efficiently and knows there stuff.
