I installed the new UPR Rock Crusher Shifter in the 88 GT

This arrived at work today so I pulled the Stang into the warehouse and bolted it in on my lunch break real quick. This shifter looks really killer IMO, has a nice custom hot rod Shelby Stang feel to it. It took rowing a couple of shifts to get used to the different lever and knob position but it feels great...nice and tight not like the stock shifter and the sloppy rubber bushing. I think where this shifter will really shine is when I put in a short throw Pro 5.0 Shifter base with shorter throws. With a short shifter on my Tremek and Pro 5.0 in my 85 - sometimes I find myself having to lean forward a little trying to catch 3rd. Shouldn't need to do that now.
I'm going to pick up an aftermarket shift boot like the old square Hurst Universal boots and bolt that into place rather than putting the factory boot on. I also think a white shift knob would look better but this one was included with it. Gives the car a more modern-nostalgic feel. Shifter looks good in the car especially with the bullitts. Trying to carry over the modern shelby them with my 88 GT. I'm looking into Mach I seats next.

I love the looks, too, but again, looks like it'd be better for a cruiser than anything you plan on taking to the track.

Then again, being that it's only a matter of two bolts, I guess you could always just swap it out while you're in the pits and then swap it back when you're done flogging it down the quarter-mile...

I would say go with the stock boot, the rubber hurst boots look cheesy in foxes IMO. I had a similar shift lever in my car and hated trying to shift fast, its more of a push down than a pull back. They do look cool tho.

Here's the Mr. Gasket boot that I affixed to the bottom of the black plastic console bezel. It achieves the look I'm going for and looks clean and almost factory looking. Yeah when you bring it back into 2nd or 4th it seems like it's back quite a bit. But my elbow is as low as the shift knob so the erbonomics really aren't bad and I like how it shifts. With shift levers, knobs and whatnot - it really depends on your height, where you're positioned in the car as far as the seat, etc. Some of this shifters will work for some and maybe not for others. I like it though, I've already driven with it in the car home and to work this morning for about a total of 60-70 miles and it feesl sweet. Until I get a short throw shifter base on it and take it down the quarter I will wait to comment on whether it will work for racing. Hey for $40 what the heck.

I think I'm going to design my own which will be very similar to this but not angle back quite as far. I'm also going to have mine made out of titanium. I have a good buddy who works at a place where they do a ton of laser and water jet stuff. I've sent him designs for other parts we made on a couple show cars and the stuff turns out nice.

I have a titanium (actually an implantable-grade ti alloy) knob that I machined for my car and I love it. Ti is light like aluminum, but I think machines to a much nicer finish, has a better color, and resists scratching. If I still had the resources, everything in my car would be machined from titanium. That and how cool is it to be able to say, "yea, that's made out of titanium"?
