today i put the top down and take the seats out. clean them up, Clean the carpet. (it gets better) Very nice day out today. Around 88 or so, And the weather Chanel said no rain. So i figured ill go out with some friends for a while and leave the top down.( so it can air out). So about an hour later i get home and it starts to sprinkle. so i go out get my keys and try to crank the car over.NONTHING happens. I just figure o well, and i turn the key backwards. Try to put the top up. It starting going then it stops. WTF then i see a little smoke coming from the trunk so im like just great. So i pull the keys out and go and open the trunk. convertible motor is still smoking a little bit. so i pull some wires and find one that was grounding it's self out. So i cut it and replace it and wire it back up. by this time my legs are sticking out of the trunk and it is pouring. went back up front to put the key in and put the top up nothing again. Battery is totally dead. So i run inside and ask my dad where the keys are to his truck and he says "i don't know. you the stupid ass the left your top down. I say. "well i didn't plan on a brand new battery being dead". so he just says "find them yourself" about 2 mins later i find them. i get the jumper cable out hook them to my battery and then start the truck. I proceed to jump out an go over to my car and turn the key backwards and put the top up. been raining for about 45 mins by now.

carpet, seat floor mats. everything is soaked. :notnice: :(

so just in the past 45 mins has been the worst day that i can remember of in the past couple years of my life.

so far today.

hand is all cut up. from ******* with the vert motor :nonono:
seats are soaked. :(
carpet is soaked. just about everything is soaked. :(
brand new dead battery
ripped my brand new car cover
and i have a headache from listening to my mom and dad bitch about it.

i wouldn't be surprised if i get struck by lightning before the day is over.

Why would my brand new battery be dead? nonthing was left on in the car.

all in all. today has sucked. :(

If something was shorting out while you were gone it would drain the battery asap. I used to have an old cd player in my cavalier that broke inside and the radio would drain the battery over night.

From personal experience here is what you do.

Stand in the backseat and grab the top by the header and you can manually pull it up. It take some muscle but as long as you exert a constant pull, just kinda lean back towards the front set it will come up. Once it gets past about half way up you can set it down on the header and latch it down. Done it many times when I had a flaky top motor.

Beats the hell out of soaking your interior while trying to mess with the top motor.

how long do motors typically last? I haven't had any problems with mine and I put my top up and down probably more than anybody, I can't stand to leave the top down when I go in anywhere.

They really should last quite a while. Usually the brushes wear out. The more you use it the more wear you put on the brushes in the motor. Just a note for you guys that don't want to pay the high price for a new motor. Ford used the same top motor design on Mustangs from 1965 to 1993. So any motor from in between those years will work with a Fox Mustang. I swapped the spare motor I keep for my 65 into my 93 when the motor in it died. Works like a champ and the spare was out of a 66. So that gives you an idea on how long they can last.

Just remember we aren't laughing with you. We are laughing at you

Sorry bout the luck though. It sucks getting caught in the rain with a non functional top motor.
