Okay, I have been messing around with my car lately, today I decided to check the base timing, I have a brand new harmonic balancer(about 5000 miles) it is a stock replacement from autozone. I had no timing marks on it that I could see so I pulled the number one plug and rotated it until I felt a burst of air come out the spark plug hole. I figured this is where it is at top dead center on the compression stroke. I then looked at the balancer and there were timing marks on it, just very hard to see. I put some white out on the 0 mark and started the car. I was running retarded. While the car was running I disconnected the spout connecter and timed it. I only had to move the distributer a little tiny bit to get it to 10 degrees advanced, and I cant go anymore advanced because the tfi module is hitting my upper radiator hose. Anyway, I plugged the spout back in wehn i was done and the idle surged rediculously and the car died. Now the idle surges continuosly and will not stay running at idle. Also the damn thing is pinging like a sob. What did I do? All I did was unplug the spout, the thing had a rock solid idle before I messed with the timing, I doubt the balancer is spun, besides the timing marks where very close to where I estimated tdc to be with my crude test. So what should I look for? I realize the tps and everything should be checked, but the thing that confuses me is the idle was rock solid before, I also tried putting the timing back to where it was, which was basically straight up and down, but the car still surges. I also tried disconnecting the battery and that was no help. Thanks guys!!
