I need a new balancer?

i heard alot of people talking about those pioneer ones or somthing, Anyone know where i could pick one up? I mite get a Romac if labor install isn't going to be too much, i gotta ask my mechanic. I have a stock cobra, dont know if i need a SFI one. I do spend alot of time in the upper rpms as i race alot,lol, but its not really high rpm at 5800 .....

their not bad to change yourself as long as you have the puller tool (which you can rent)

stick the car in 5th gear,
remove the belt,
drain the oil,
remove the nut holding the balencer to the crank,
use the balencer puller to pull the balencer

installing it sometimes you have to bake it in the oven for a few mine so that the metal expands and will slide over the crank easier, also dont forget to put a dab of RTV on the keyway of the crank

then you tighten the nut (90ft lbs i think but you should double check)
replace belt
fill oil
drink beer

why do you have to drain the oil? When I replaced mine on my gt I did not have to? I didnt have to mess with oil period.

just as a precaution i guess since it slides inside the timing housing which is open to the oil. not really needed to do

If you hang out in the upper RPM's like you say you do, I would go with a more race oriented version (the Romac or an SFI version of something else).

As said, it is not that hard to do - you can save the labor costs and put them toward the balancer itself if you want to.

what do u think about the pioner non sfi, should be better then stock right?

well sometimes when i get on busy cali freeways i just leave it in 2nd or 3rd so i can get over a few lanes, alot of slow drivers in the slow lanes here(tons of trucks). or ill cruise at high rpm if im gonna do a roll on with someone

Based on what you said.

You want a sfi spec hb.

If you are gonna have someone do the work, I'd go for the Pioneer.

it needs no spacer
and
you don't have to deal with any of that heating it up to get it on stuff

Maybe that would save you some labor cost.

Why not do it yourself?

I think the high rpm's will kill it!

who makes the cheapest sfi units? I also do not see why i need an SFI in the previous opionions my car has no cam and does not rev high at all, the cheaper ones say theyre designed up to 6500rpm and im not near that

... im too busy right now to take the time to fiddle with this car, also seeing as the balancer is important i dont want any mistakes made on my part.and dont have the tools for it. Its ok my best friend is a mechanic, and usually he doesn't rip me off, i get everything done probably cheaper then what most people would pay

Can someone please tell me what they think of this, seems cheap for an SFI balancer but it says its afluid damper, ive never heard of this?. the seller seems to be in the same city as me and maybe i can go pick it up

IIRC, I saw a thread on Hardcore where peeps were saying the fluid hb's were not effective.

If you don't see the need for the sfi hb then just find the best non sfi hb you can that makes you comfortable.

I was at 60K miles on my stocker hb and it had given me no probs of any kind.

In one weekend I made maybe 8 to 12 wot, 3rd gear blasts in the rpm range of 6000 to 6300 for final wot af ratio tuning.

Couple days later ... the hb was on the way to destruction.

I am with Grady - I would not want a fluid damper on a street car (I checked them out in general when researching).

FWIW, I would rather have a real nice street damper than the cheapest SFI damper you can find, but that is just me. SFI does not = good by default.
