i was driving my car tonight on the highway and as i was getting on, i went about 3/4 throttle up to about 4000 rpm in 4th. it was making all kinds of noise and there was ALOT of smoke. it wasn't pinging, but it was not normal noise either.

no question about it, my motor is on it's way out.

and the kenne-bell hasn't sold yet, so i have like no money to work with.

and i don't have any friends who work on their cars, so if i did get a new or jy motor, i'd have to pay someone to put it in because i'm sure i can't handle it myself. plus, i don't even have a garage to do the work in anyway.

and now i have this polished typhoon intake sitting in my basement because i was going to copy grady's combo with the money from the sale of the kb, but that is foolish when i have bottom end issues.

i guess i'll park it and drive my mother-in-law's 1991 caprice classic station wagon for the rest of my life.

guys, give me some hope, please

what would you do?

You should probably do a compression and leak down test before pronouncing your shortblock dead.

Too bad you don't live near Cols, Ohio. I found a couple of low mileage (relatively) 5.0 HO's in Mark VII LSC's in the JY. Can be had for $100 each and the removal. I have facilities to do the swap, too. Ever get out this way...

reddy....is the place your talking about near columbus? I could use an extra running block. I might make the trip up there if what you say is true.

The compression test you can do on your own - leakdown is more informative but much more involved for a driveway task.

Do a quick search or google, but the abridged version is: Remove all plugs, Disable ignition and/or fuel. Prop throttle wide open. Put a charger on the battery (optional). Screw the tester (30-40 beans at the parts store) into the plug holes. Crank motor.

I'd recommend doing a wet test if the dry numbers look good. For each cylinder, I normally just do a dry test and then wet right afterwards (so you can see immediately for comparison's sake).

Good luck Chris.

Does your car use oil between oil changes?

Sometimes, that can be a sign of rings not sealing all that good anymore.

Sorry to see you MAY have motor issues.

If so ... stick to your plans ... or at least see if you think your goals are worth the wait until funds are more plentiful.

Maybe your plans are worth the wait and if you compromise ... you might have to deal with regrets.

decisions decisions decisions

We all have to regroup from time to time

Hope the c test turns out good and the prob is minor

ever thought about selling th KB and just rebuilding the bottom end?if you dont damage anything else, you always have the rest of the engine and that sweet polished typhoon would do great then.call me stupid(not literally),but i wouldnt think a rotating assembly would be more than you can get for the KB.good luck to ya!

Seems to me that he is selling the KB. He wants to build up a nice N/A combo.

yes, every fill-up (about once a week) i check the oil and it is usually about 1/2 quart low every time

stick to my plans ... heh ... i had a plan: bolt on a KB. that didn't work out so well. sticking to that plan means i should hold onto the k/b and try to find a cheap JY motor or save up for a rebuild. that's food for thought.

Have you thought of dropping the asking price or putting OBO after the $3k. Your situation may require you to take a small hit in order to get started on the project. I don't know much about SC or the cost of one but isn't $3k right up there with a brand new unit .

a new polished 1.7L KB runs about $3600

add on top of that the fact that it was just rebuilt, 42# injectors, a holley lower intake, various pulleys, belts and vac/boost gauge, and other miscellaneous stuff, and i think $3000 is a pretty good deal.

i think i'd rather hold out for the $3000 and save what i can than take a hit.

if it sells, then i'll have some cash for a h/c/i buildup, else after i get the money for a new (or JY) bottom end, i'm thinking i might bolt the KB back on and see what happens.

Hit the submit button too fast

You said it was making a loud noise

Can you describe it and where it seemed to be happening at?
