I have the stock POS A4LD in my 89 lx. I want to stay automatic for sheer time savings with the change. So I want another auto, but are there any auto trannys that work in my car that will bolt right up and are much better? I dont even care if I have to add some parts to make it perform better, I just want to get this peice out of it, its ruining my style. lol. I would also plan on adding the biggest tranny cooler I could find. Thanks guys.

add a few parts and swap in a 5 speed. the a4ld was mistake for alot of reasons that new parts cant fix. I have friends who have them rebuilt professionally and they STILL go out every 5k miles(thank God for the warranty!). Besides...who can style with an a4ld anyways??

Save the money and go T5 man you will save a lot more in the long run....... There are whole Kits that I have seen here and there that will give you all that you need to convert the A4LD to the T5 if you want to pay the money or you can go and get a parts list and pick parts up here and there as it fits your budget.

What exactly do you mean? I would love to go T5, if I find one I will. But what else do I need? And I really dont want to spend a lot. I'm a college kid on a budget trying to make his car more ecconomical!

if you must stay auto, and want a tougher auto then you can swap in a C4 providing you can find a belhousing for it. However the C4 has NO overdrive, and is a pretty inefficient transmission. It IS however pretty bulletproof. But honestly i would swap in a T5, thats what i did. Cost me about 350 BTW

Did it cost you 350 with tranny?

Where are you located MSM0075?? how much? I asked around some second places and the big question they all had is whether mine was a 2 or 3 wire tranny. I checked and I have both 2 and 3 wire.

Central Jersey, Just make me an offer for the trans, I've had it in my garage for a few months after I parted the car out, I havn't made any effort to sell it.

I guess I should of looked at the left side and I would of seen where your from :p . Being from Halifax NS Canada I guess it would cost more for transportion of the tranny then what its worth. To be honest I have no idea on what they are worth. I know I could get one for 250.00 CAD but with 250,000 KM on it. So

Check around on traders and in junk yards for a car to donate the parts. You can usually find decent donor cars (read: buy a grinder! ;) ) for a few hundred dollars. Ford put 2.3L engines in almost everything in the 80s and some 90s cars. Find a 2.3L powered car and check to see if it's the tranny you want. Most later 2.3L (EFI) engines had the T5 for a std trans. Look for 87-93 LXs for a perfect slam dunk...but even most cars interchange with modest mechanical knowledge. Even the early SROD 5-speeds are decent behind a stock 4-pot motor. If you stay auto...basically every tranny Ford made with O/D is crap in stock form.

:bang: Reinstalling an A4LD is like banging your head against a wall...It feels good when you stop! :bang:

I think I'm just gonna look for a junked TC. I've been tossing around the thought of doing either a 5.0 or a 2.3T swap. I've got mixed answers. But if I can find a junked TC with a manual, I'll just do the entire swap.
