My car is doing it again It doesnt want to start back up after reaching full temp and being shut off and left for 5 minutes or less. It starts up great when its cold, it only does this when it is at full temp. It just cranks and cranks and cranks......... and when it finally does start back up ( from playing with the throttle until it does ) it sputters and coughs real bad and needs alot of gas to keep it going, but after that its back to normal.
Any ideas? Im desperate

Thanks

Next time it does this, before trying to restart it, pull the air cleaner and look down the throats and operate the throttle linkage to see if the accellerator pump is shooting gas. If not, then your gas may be boiling out of the carb, vapor lock

D's right it sounds like a vapor lock problem to me also. get a 1" thick spacer(phenolic material NOT metal) and use it to insulate the carb.

Anything that would make a good seal, but isn't conductive would work. I have heard of peope using bake-a-light and plywood before.

The stock spacer has a vacuum port coming off of it on the back, can i get a phenolic spacer with this same port on it?

Phenolic is a form of plastic. The PCV port in the stock spacer isn't necessary if you've got a Holley or Edelbrock carb, these have a PCV port in the carb base.

Oh ok, i dont have a Holley or Edelbrock carb. I have a Motorcraft, can you get these phenolic spacers with the port for the PCV? or are they basically just a square block.

I haven't seen one, but then again I haven't looked, but you could always drill and tap one for the PCV. So you have a Motorcraft? I've had a similar problem with a couple of their 2 bbl's lately, but this was with flooding after you shut them down. You can smell gas after shut down and they'd be hard to restart. On one, I had to adjust the float level down to cure it.

The car might benefit from a spacer but seems like something more fundamental might be involved. Are you sure the choke is opening fully? Check the position of the choke plate when the car won't start. The choke may be flooding the engine after it is warm.
