I need new muffler bearings

actucally the difference in power between the sl in the vr4 isnt as much as people think

the awd eats up alot of hp from a roll .

my buddys stock sl 5 speed goes 15.1 at 94-95
another buddys stock vr4 goes 13.9 at 94-95
from a roll dead even.

actucally really nice cars and handle great really nice technology for being 13 years old or however

richker -- Why 60 degree? Almost EVERY 3.0L V6 out there is 60 degree - of course on the 6, that makes for an even fire engine -- but the reason is packaging. Think about it -- the 3.4L v8 had to go in the same engine compartment (Taurus) that the old SHO 3.0L V6 did. While it does cramp the intake tract a bit, it's workable, and it makes for a MUCH more compact V8 - height they had - width they didn't. Same on the Volvo sport ute the engine comes in -- it's available with an INLINE twin turbo 6 -- height they have - width they don't. Odd fire imbalance is handled by balance shafts -- pretty common technology. I think Ford/Volvo went that route because engine development costs were significantly reduced given an existing architecture. And of course -- it don't sound like our V8's -- to me, it sounds more like an inline 5 cylinder (VW, Audi, Acura) than anything else - but that's just my ear.

Oh - and there have been LOTS of engines with uneven power pulses -- GM built the old 90 degree 3.8L V6 for years before they put staggered throws on the crank to even out the power pulses (another way to deal with it). And every Harley ever built has those uneven pulses -- the source of their unique sound and that vibration that makes things fall off of them regularly. In fact, most of the Japanese cruisers switched from wider angle -even fire Vtwins BACK to an uneven-fire angle because their customers WANTED that lumpy idle and vibration. Go figure.

Brian - actually, the difference in POWER is significant; it's the difference in PERFORMANCE that is not as great. While the awd consumes some power, the biggest factor is that the VR4 is quite a bit heavier than the fwd model.

Rollin', in my 2 point 0,
it runs low 18's, yo, that really ain't slow.
Tha girlies on stand by,

Did ya stop? No, I just flew by.
Kept on, pursuing to tha next block,
I bust a left and I'm headin' to tha next stop.
The block was dead, yo, so I continued to A-1-A,

Why a 60 degree V8? That makes for a narrow, tall engine with an uneven firing order since 360/8 = 45, not 60. To get an even firing order you need a even multiple of 45. I would like to know, since it obiviously works well.

If I'm not mistaken, it's built with the same architecture as the Duratec (albeit with 2 extra cylinders). It supposedly saved on the cost, but it sure was a turd compared to the first generation V6, wasn't it? BTW, I got to drive one of those V6's in 1992. The sound of that V6 going to almost 7k remains one of the visceral moments I've had when driving. Another was the acceleration and wicked sound of that turbo/intercooled 90 degree 3.8 liter Grand National Regal my Dad and I rode in on a demo ride back in 1987. Engines with crazy V angles?: try the VW 15 deg V6 on for size.

jwzg - I should clarify -- because the Duratec and the SHO six share bore and stroke, many felt the Duratec was derived from the SHO. Ford/Yamaha insiders insist that while the two seem related, in actuality they are not. I suspect it was relation by osmosis -- that is, the same Ford engine designers that contracted with/worked with Yamaha for the SHO then designed the Duratec. No wonder the two SEEM related. You are correct that the V8 is basically the V6 SHO with 2 cylinders added. Bore/stroke were changed though -- obviously, otherwise we'd have ended up with a 4.0L 60 degree V8.

Interestingly enough, Volvo, Yamaha and Ford all officially claim that Volvo's new 4.4L version IS NOT related to the 3.4L SHO V8 --- probably because of the terrible cam-gear-drive warranty issues related to that motor. Google it and you'll find evidence of LOTS OF WARRANTY LAWSUITS related to that. Once again, insiders insist the 4.4L IS an outgrowth of the 3.4 SHO V8.

Jaguar's 3.0L V6 IS Duratec based. And the 3.9L DOHC V8 in the Lincoln and new Tbird shares heritage with the 4.0+L versions in the new Jags.

Hahaha, but seriously,
I know this guy that blew up his Honda and it's at the machine shop right now.
He can't figure out why his 4 Eagle con rods ($600) cost twice as much as my 8 Eagle rods for my 306 ($300). :D Of course his are H-beam and mine are I-beam, but still.... I think H-beam for my 306 were like $500. neener neener

Mike, the Duratec, NOT the 1st gen. SHO architecture, actually formed the basis for the SHO V8. The intake and heads on the V8, as you said, were Yamaha designed. The block is good ol' FoMoCo. Even the pistons and connecting rods are the same as the 2.5 liter Duratec V6.
