$1200.00 bucks for her 70 Mustang convert. She said she will talk to her husband. (divorced)

I informed her as nicley as I could without insulting her that the car needed 5 grand to make it nice, and id offer more but its a six.

Im thinking theyll go for 15 to 2 grand, Ill pay either, but natch id like to get it for as low as possible.

I just want to ask you guys, I looked at the running gear and brakes and stuff and it looks like its all the stuff an 8 would have- big rear, 5 lugs, front power discs- but its a six.

I have a 302 Id like to put in it.

Is it a doable swap, and what is involved? What new parts do i need? Should I keep the 3 speed trans with the 302 (is it good enough) or should i get a 4 speed or an auto?

I dont want to make this a race car, just a good street ride that looks good and handles.

If it has 5 lug wheels, something has been upgraded or downgraded, because all 6 cylinder cars had 4 lug wheels in 1970. I can't imagine why, but it sounds like it once had a V8, although I wonder why anyone would go from a V8 to a 6?

Get the info off the Data label and post it, I can tell you what it had originally. If it originally had a V8, your swap should be relatively easy.

wrong. Ford used 5 lug across the board starting in 68, whether it was a 6 or V8.

To fit a 302 in a 70 thats originally a six, you'll need the right frame mounts, a V8 bellhousing and torque converter , and maybe a bigger radiator. Pretty simple. It should have the 8" rear which will hold up fine behind a mild V8.

As geostang351 said. My 68 I6 has (well had) four lug drums at all four corners.

starting in 69 when the 250 six was installed they upgraded the drivetrain and brakes to the v8 components, i think mainly because it was easier on the assembly line since the 250 uses the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the small blocks, therfore the car could roll down the line and either have the 250 or 302 installed without changing anything. also front discs are pretty rareto see on six banger cars but they were made, i once found a 69 coupe that was a factory 250 with discs in a junkyard.

My 69 6 cylinder coupe had 5 lugs.

I think all 69s on up had 5 lug. Early 6 mavericks had 4 lugs. Mustangs IIs had 4 lugs.

There's a black 69 Fastback in my neighborhood that has 4-lug wheels.

1970 was the year all 6 cyl & small blocks went to 5-lug.

Don't forget, they did use different front springs for 6 & 8 cyl.

I stand corrected then. I've never seen a 69 or 70 with 4 lugs...then again nearly every one I've seen has been a V8.
