As of late after driving my car it smells like gas. I doubt I can be running that rich. Anyway.. I was driving down the highway yesterday at about 7.30 and it was just as the sun was going down, so it was dark enough to put the headlights on and I decided I was gunna get on it a little. I stepped on it a little and at about 90mph I hear a loud pop.. almost like a gunshot. I get home and my friend that was following me said he saw the biggest shot of flames shoot out my tailpipes.. [Personally, I think it would have been pretty cool to see, but I don't think my car should be shooting flames unless modified ot do so.] So I have no idea what it could be. I replaced the pipes that go down to the gas tank [where you fill it up] about 2 months ago. I know I need a new fuel pump cuz' I can hear it when I turn on the key and it sounds like it's dying.

Anyway, I have no idea what it is.. Anyone?

You can usually hear the fuel pump once you turn the key but it gets louder once its on its way out.

As far as your flames and back fire thats casued b/c your running to rich. Its better then being lean but its prob killing your gas mileage.

My car used to backfire sometimes if my pipes worked their way loose. After I put on my prochamber it always smelt a little more gassy but I never worried about it. I just always checked once in a while that my exhaust didn't work it's way loose from speedbumps and stuff. Dunno if this is anywhere near your problem but... just wanted to put it out there.

i know with my o/r H setup, if i give it very little to no throttle or let the rpms hang so that a lower gear slows me down, my car will give a hellofa bang if i get on it after, its just the rich exhaust allowing fuel puddle and ignite in your pipe, i guess its nothing major wrong with your motor or anything, but it does piss me off...

What is your timing set at???

If you think you have a fuel leak, you need to find the general area. And usually you can smell it and get a close proximity on it. Then use almost all of your gas, and with 1-2 gallons left, add some flourescent dye in the gas fill tube, and then drive add a little more gas to get all of the dye into the tank. Drive around for a mile or two, making sharp and abrupt turns to mix it around somewhat. Then get it home, in a dark garage with the lights off, and use a black light and look for the dye.

Ive read posts on the rubber seal being an issue before.

Yes!

If your Mustang has sat for a long time, the filler tube gasket can dry rot, as mine did. It was leaking horribly.

You need to address this immediately; mine got so bad I was literally spilling lots of raw fuel onto the road.

It's somewhat of a pain in the ass to replace. I did mine simultaneously with my fuel pump, and I think dropping the tank made it easier.

I believe they are talking about the gasket where the fuel filler neck goes into the gas tank (its on the tank itself). My friends 89 LX had a leak after replacing the fuel pump. It turns out when we lifted the tank back into place, his fuel line popped out, and instead of being tucked above the tank, fell towards the wheel well. His 295/50's made a nice hole in the line. It doesn't sound like this is your problem, but something to make sure not to do when/if you replace your gasket.
