Please anyone, tell me how bad this is. I did a burn out in my 99 GT 5 speed up to 6K rpm. Afterwards, I noticed a tapping at the 4000 rpm range in neutral, and at 3500 when in gear. How bad is the damage?

You may want to elaborate a little. Did you hold it at 6K for a few seconds or minutes, etc.??

Naw, it hit 6000 and I let off of it. I'm hoping that I didn't irreversable damage, if so, is it hard to throw a 32 valve in it's place?

is it a tap or a rattle? how loud is it? if its a rattle its then it could be your throwout bearing. when you spin a rod bearing usually you hear it at ALL rpms.

wow.. if the tap increases with RPM's, then its probably a rod.. funny thing is my smoking (sorta) 4.6 npi has hit the limiter more then most cars and still rolls around great

It's more of a tap, not a rattle. Is there a way I could post audio in here?

+1

I think the year also plays a big roll because I've read serveral time here and on other forums that 99-00s are prone to spinning rod bearings

depends on the route you take... you can buy a stock shortblock out of another 4.6 99+ vehicle, or rebuild your original one. If your in hurry i'd just buy another motor out of a crown vic and slap it in there.. use your cover and all the supporting mustang specific and roll on

I think it should be fine. I have had mine up to 6,500 when I changed my reve limtr and shift points. I only did that once and then changed it. Right now I have it set for 6k. I have also bounced it off the limter a few times and that is now set at 6,250. She is still running very strong.

i agree, i have my shift light set at 6k and my car has 101k now and the biggest problem ive ever had was the iac going out....and im blown....i think if you take care of your car, use synthetic oil and treat it right you can have as much fun as you want reving past 6k and not have problems..these motors love the top end
