Other info about my baby:
10w30 Royal Purple, changed about a month ago
New spark plugs (forgot the name, but I usually get as close to OEM as possible, maybe Bosch
New IAC installed about 3 weeks ago.
144000 miles, no problems at all before this
Can hear the tap around 3K rpm now, slightly though.

Is it worth fixing or just find a 32 valve engine?
Any other questions about the car, just ask, and I'll reply.

A rod bearing comes in 2 halves which rap around the crank. When you spin a bearing, one half overlaps the other leaving a gap at the opposite end.

Every spun bearing I've heard sounds like a deep knock from deep in the engine, not a tap. Anythings possible.

What do you mean by overlaps? During a momentary lack of oil, all it does is grab onto the crankshaft and spin within the rod/main bearing housing. The grabbing onto the crankshaft messes up the crankshaft and sheers off the metal from the inside of the bearing. The spinning sheers off metal from the outside of the bearing and the rod/main bearing housing creating extra room for things to move around and knock.

Here's my example...

About the only other thing that could make a tapping sound would be if somehow your timing chain jumped a tooth and now your valves are hitting but that's not very likely. They sound similar to where I thought it was another bearing and pulled the engine again. I just had that happen but most likely it's your bearing.

I have small after market cams, and stock valve springs. I spin mine to 6300-6400 at the track all the time. I have also hit the 6500 rpm rev limiter a few times. It seems to take it just fine.

I think maybe you where a little low on oil, and spun a little faster the 6k. Which probably spun a rod or main bearing.

maybe your timing chain could be wore slap out, dunno just taken a stab at it. maybe a worn cam lobe, could be the trans, my 97s t45 is gettin ready to go south, and mine sounds like a rod knock time to time at any rpms good luck man and always look for the best in any situation, cause if it is the engine, youll get to put a new motor in it.

Jokes have no place in Tech. Take it to Off Topic.

To the OP...try to load a recording of it to Photobucket or something we can hear what you are talking about. One bump off the rev limiter usually doesn't do any harm. That is why it is there, to prevent damage before it happens. I bumped off my limiter more times I can count and still haven't had any issues after 185K miles.
