I think i need a DRIVESHAFT

Last fall before i put my car away for the winter i had my 4.10's put in and i noticed a weird vibration around 110-120 mph (i let off after 120,so i'm not sure if it would have went away). I figured it was probably my bald rear tires, but i now know it's not the tires. I have brand new tires on the car and i still get the vibration around 110-120 mph. I'm pretty sure i've read some posts about people having the same issue with the gears and they have replaced driveshafts and that took care of the problem.

so, what driveshaft should i get? Steeda or Ford Racing? or any other better ones out there? they all seem to be just under $200 (price isn't a problem), i just want the best/lightest one out there.

The Ford one is a nice piece, I'm not familiar w/ the Steeda.

Some cars get the vibe with a gearswap, some don't. From what I hear it has to do with the stock DS only being balanced to 1800-2500 rpms at Visteon, while the aftermarket ones get spun up higher and also the Al absorbs some of the vibration.

(Plus they sure look pretty!)

The steel production shafts are balanced at 2500rpm. The Cobra and Aluminum FRPP D/S's are balanced at 6000rpm

If you ever decide to get off your LAZY A$$ sinisterblack98 and install your parts that are just sitting in your basement and garage collecting DUST, you'll get rid of any vibration that you have in your Cobra!

Actually, I bought my 01 with 4:10's and an aluminum DS already installed and it vibrates from 80mph to about 87mph. After that it seems to get better, but unfortunately I spend alot of time in the 80-85 range on the highway. I know it is not a tire issue as I have replaced them. Any other suggestions as to what it may be or how to fix it??

3 things you could do

#1 Forget about it 'til something( a u-joint) breaks or it gets worse.

#2 Take it somewhere and have it re-balanced. If you do, replace the u-joints(Get DANA u-joints(SPICER) if you do) before having it re-spun and make sure they at least spin it at a minium of 4000 rpms. This can be costly to do so therefore.You colud...

#3 Buy a new one. More than likely, replacing the u-joints and having it
re-balanced will cost you more than just buying a new one.

Like I said before, The FRPP aluminum D/S are made at the same plant as the steel OEM ones are. UNFORTUNATELY- Occasionally during shipping or handling the might get bumped arond and knocked slightly out of balance.

Depending on when you purchased the one you have now, it might be an older one that was made without DANA u-joints. Alot of times when we ran out of DANA parts, we were forced to assemble them with regular OEM Ford u-joints. The new ones however (late 2001 and newer) are all (should be) made with DANA u-joints and are assembled at a new Facility with Brand New better balancing equipment.

If it's not the D/S, check the wheel bearings or have the rear axle looked at.

Steeda or FRPP?

Steeda or Ford Racing?? any suggestions which DS i should go with??

I don't know anything about the one from Steeda.

I'll be getting the FRPP D/S for myself.

I know the FRPP on has a side wall thickness of almost a 1/4", comes with a hardened flange and slip yoke and SHOULD come with H.D. DANA 1330 u-joints. They are about 10-12#'s lighter than the OEM steel units.

The FRPP Mustang D/S is almost identical to the ones used in the CROWN VICTORIA police cruisers. Only difference being the tube length and the slip yoke.

You may be right, but it still might be tires.

Where is the vibration coming from? Do you notice it in the steering wheel?

If its in the steering wheel you might still have defective tires.

I had a bad vibration...steering wheel bounced up and down from 90+ and after getting my stock front goodyears high speed balanced i found out they were defective. I got new BFGs all around and its fine.

Just a thought in case you dont need a new Driveshaft...

Thanks, nice 60' time! but yeah, its not the tires!! that i know, i can feel it trough the tranny/rear end. I'm 90% sure it's the DS, plus it's a good cheap mod, so it's not a waste of money.

I just found out today from the shop that my clutch (#2) was really dead... I knew it was getting funky but around town it seemed ok...

I got a new clutch and some other goodies...cant wait to pick it up tomorrow!

If money isn't an object and you want the best, call Precision Shaft Technologies at 888-575-7888 and talk to Mark or Arlene about a carbon fiber shaft. They'll custom build one just the way you want it. Mine was about $800, but their CF units for 'Stangs range from about $550 - $600 up into the thousands. Here's a link to their website:

I have a 97 Cobra, got the shakes at around 90-100 mph after the 4.30 gear install...just found out my stock driveshaft was bent...Have no idea what caused that...but it is now straightened and balanced, and tonight I plan on taking the car to the track for the first time since I bought it stock.

I think i need a DRIVESHAFT
