I think I'm crazy...

Hey all,

I think I'm crazy. I'm 18 and just bought an 05 V6. I've had it a few weeks now, but I can't seem to enjoy it. I don't know why. I love the damn thing, but I'm always tense driving it. I don't know what's wrong with me. I actually have one of my favorite cars and instead of driving it around, it just sits in the garage. I've had it about four weeks and it only has 80 something miles on it. Most people who have pleasure cars drive them around just to have fun driving them around right? For some reason I can't do that. I don't know why I can't just drive it and enjoy it. Hell I don't know why I posted this here. Probably to make me feel better in some way. Who knows. Maybe I'm just afraid something will happen to it. I don't know.

Anyway thanks for reading my ramble of stupidity. I hope I haven't wasted too much of your life.

Hey I'm 18 too and about to buy my first Stang. I'm worried I'm gonna turn out in the same situation.

I'm worried about being worried. I don't want to wreck, I dont want to get tickets, I dont want to do anything stupid. I know for a fact I will LOVE this car but I'm not sure how I'll be with it. I know it may sound childish but the fastest I've gone is 90mph in my truck and the most HP i've ever actually full out driven is 190. What if the 300 horses scares the **** outta me for the first month or so I drive it down the freeway? Or I also worry if I'll shift right. I've had a beater standard ranger but its not gonna be the same in a brand new mustang. (Oh I had the beater ranger before my current one. drove it for about a year). I drive standards every day but nothing like a GT.

Just MY rant. Don't feel bad as long as you love the car. Maybe its just caution or maybe you feel the same way I do?

Hey Black,

It is common to be overly cautious when you get your first really nice car. Once the first ding happens or you have to take it to the dealer the first time, it will be better.

The same thing happened to me when I got my 03 GT. I garaged it and drove my 98 V-6. Once the first ding happened and I pulled a Dukes of Hazard jump over a street intersection - requiring new upper and lower control arms in the front. It was all better.

Enjoy your car as you are comfortable. You are not crazy - just cautious and that is a quality to be commended on!

I completely agree. Some people get these cars handed to them and do whatever they want. Like I posted earlier about a guy I know. His dad gave him a brand new 04 cobra and he doesn't use a clutch because he says it slows him down. His dad buys him a new transmission every three months. Its a good quality to have but to an extent. Don't let it stop you from enjoying the car. Just roll down the windows, turn up your tunes, and cruise town. Don't go anywhere, don't do anything else....just cruise town. I CAN'T WAIT to get in mine and do that at this time of night. Light traffic, warm night, calming.

OH yeah, I've been in fast cars before don't get me wrong. My cousin has a 450HP TT Supra and my friend has a Z28 with God knows how much. Fast as all hell. Just never driven one daily.

On topic - drive your car, have fun but don't get too crazy.

I've decided that if I ever have to paint mine, then I will get it striped...If I have to replace the hood, I'll get one that's more aggressive looking, etc. So I'm looking at body damage (if/when it happens) as an excuse to start modding... It's made me much calmer when my baby is sitting out in a bad thunderstorm that might start hailing and I'm at work several miles from my safe garage

WHOA, I can't believe you worry about this at 18. That's great! I mean you can be too cautious too so don't let that bite you either. I live in a college town and when they all show up, the crosses start popping up like crazy along side the road. With the combo of California drivers and college kids the whole town drives their cars like they have absolutly not a care in the world that they're diving something that could take innocent lives instantly.

That sums it up pretty good actually I think man. My jump was from 165 V6 to the Stang's 210 V6. Not as big as yours, but from a sedan to a sports car is a jump in itself. Well one thing that I DON'T have to worry about, which it sounds like you do, is a manual. Mine is auto. Oh well. I've always been kind of a laid back introvert so I just need to get used to living alittle.

Thanks guys. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has felt this way. I don'tfeel as "stupid" now.

One thing I have to do soon is go cruising and pop in "Fuel" by Metallica. Must sound good with the Premium coupe's audio system huh?

And Berserker I've found I drive the Stang SLOWER than I drive my '96 oldsmobile( my everyday car). I see no point in going nuts, pissing off cops, drinking and driving, etc and don't see how anyone can enjoy that crap.

Umm you talk of someone getting handed a car, you're 18 how do you afford a new GT? How in the hell can you shift a manual without the clutch, that would actually make it slower trying to muscle the gears without a clutch.

I for one am GLAD to see your attitude! Maintaining a healthy respect for a V8 performance car (or even actually ANY car), is a VERY GOOD thing to do.
Its the younger folks that brag about how well the drive or how for them it's no problem "handling" the power that I worry.

Keep the cautious attitude, respect the car, and even enroll in some "driving lessons" at a local track will really help reduce your chances of becoming a statistic or at least your car being one

I'm 18 and I bought a 26,000 V6. I probably could have bought a GT, but the payments would have been so bad I'd have no money in my bank and I'd be working solely for the car and it's insurance with none left over to save. As it is I dumped half my account as a down payment on it to get 349 a month payments.

Haven't driven many manual transmissions, have you? I drive one everyday without using the clutch ( yea, it's a Peterbuilt ) You can shift many manual transmissions without using the clutch, if you know what you're doing. Only thing it's really needed for is to take off in that instance. The race only transmissons like the Jerico aren't meant to be shifted with a clutch, hence the reason they're called "crash" boxes. The kid who keeps trashing his, is shifting it like he's got a "crash" box, if he shifted it correctly without the clutch, he wouldn't keep trashing them.

I get a pretty good paycheck and with my employee discount it came down to $24k. $300 a month for my GT Premium. I have connections I guess. I OWN my truck and am selling it for $7000 plus what I save that amounts to about $11k total. $11k down on a $24k car leaves me with $13k financed. Works out.

Well, this guy thats shifting without a clutch is a moron and knows his daddy will pay for whatever he needs. I'm going solo on my car (just having my dad co-sign). I'm paying for it all.

When I first got my manual mustang (a 2000), I was scared like crazy to stall it, that I'd hit something, etc. It was my first car, and I'd only driven a manual occasionally before buying one. Drive for a few months on it, and you'll be comfortable as can be. You'll mess up a few times, maybe ding it up, stall it a few times, but you just can't worry about it, the car will be tough enough to live through it. Well, I hope it will.
