hey all,

i bought a 68 Merc Cougar a while ago and have been mostly not doing anyhting with it. Most of my money and time has gone into my mustang this summer. But i was planning on paying a body shop to get started on my cougar towards the end of the summer. a friend of mine restored a 67 cougar recently and came over to give his opinion, and his was that my car is too far gone to salvage, considering i can buy a rust free or mostly rust free coug for $1-2k. About the only thing good on my car is the rocker sills and the roof. it was in an accident so the front is all mangled up, the floors are literally non existant, and theres lots of holes in the trunk and on the quarters. Ive torn it down to the shell, so my friend says i could just buy a rust free shell and slap all my stuff on it. And he's right.

Still though, the thought of crushing a classic car like this is hard to accept. There arent many of these things left, but i think my friend might be right.

there is only so much that can be done to a classic cougar as sheetmetal parts are very hard to come by. almost nothing is repro'd and finding good rust free parts is getting harder and the price of them can make it almost not worth messing with. i love cougars as much as mustangs and would also hate to see another go to the crusher but if the car can't be reasonably repaired with patches then your buddy is probably right.

however, i will say that you should cut out EVERY piece of the car that is still in good shape so other people who are in the same boat as you can find some of the parts they need. keep in mind though that since cougars are so inexpensive at the moment you shouldn't expect to make a mint on the good pieces. i would sell the sheetmetal pretty cheap just to help preserve the breed.

the only caveat would be if it's a rare XR7-G, GTE or even just an XR7 with the GT package it might be worth holding onto.

yeah. this is just a basic 302 2bbl with a c4. nothing unique. otherwise i would keep it. actually i probably wouldnt have been able to afford it in the first place if it was something unique. stupid is as stupid does i guess.

ill have to give hacking it up some thought. Id love to help a dude out, but storing a roof is not easy for me at this time, i dont have too much space to spare. come to think of it, the cowl area is straight too...now im expanding the parts to nearly 10 feet long lol.

we'll see.

Dude, I'd bet that between Bryan and myself and couple other guys known to show up on Stagnet; we could send more than a few guys to relieve you of most of that car...... a clean, rust-minimal cowl could be worth a (comparative) forutne!
