well guys I would love to have a cobra 32 valve motor in my '88 fox body. I am about to buy a brand new 4.6 DOHC engine from a friend for really really cheap. The motor goes to a 96 cobra. This is a spur of the moment "I want that modification" I want the power of the 4.6 DOHC. I am wondering if any of you guys know what it takes to convert my 88 5.0 fox to a 4.6 mod motor. I am going to need the motor, T56 trans, ECU, harnesses. Which harnesses do i need? Which computers will work? What has to be modified to fit the 4.6 motor? What needs to be modified to fit the T56 trans? I know this is alot to ask... but maybe you guys can give me some links to buy this stuff and some links to figure this ***** out!! I thank all of you for your considerations!!!

Yes i believe the 96 cobras came with a t45 in them... I would love to have that beefy 6speed! i just need to know what the hard parts are gonna be. Will i have to relocate the trany crossmember? And so on.... I do not know of anyone in my area with a modular/t56 fox... I want to be that guy!!!

Cool idea, hope you like the engine. The lowend torque wont be anywhere near the 5.0. Those engine head design made for an all topend HP car. Like 6K+. Anywho, have you even driven a car with a Ford T56?

I personally think they are the worst tranny ever produced by ford (shifting wise). I would reccomend a Viper spec T56.

I have driven 2 cobras (03-04) and HATE their t56. But I have driven an 02 SS and an 01 C5 vette, and absulutly loved their T56s...worlds better. Viper spec should be about the same as those and with a .50 OD :nice: . Just a warning I guess.
Good luck.

that i will take into consideration. I still need to know where the best place to get all of the stuff i need... should i buy a doner car? Is the 4.6 swap really hard? What are some pointers that i can get...is there anyone in particular i should pm? PLEASE HELP ME!!! :bang:

buying a 99+ mustang would just make my life easy! haha... i am in love with my fox convertable! I just want to do something that really no one has! I still need sources for info. Does anyone know where i can get some quick help?

Kinda of off-topic, but I must chime in. I have to disagree. Ford's T56 is quite solid. I've driven 5 Terminators, some aggressively modded, and the T56's are holding up quite nicely. The mileage range is from 5,000 to 45,000 and they all shift quite crisply.

^ Well its a very solid tranny yes...but have have BIG problems shifting it. I cant shift the thing worth beans, even the sales man couldnt hit the gears lol. The clutch placement is all jacked up too.

I have drive alot of manual cars, and in my book takes the cake by far as the worst shifting tranny...in a car that is. LOL. But glad you didnt have a problem with it...guess this means the guy need to go drive one and see for himself.

I hope this input helps him in what tranny he chooses.

Seriously, all the ones I have driven have done excellent. I have only driven two Vette's and one Viper equipped as such. They seemed to be close in nature, in my opinion.

I will concede that the T56 in the Mustang is horrible with the stock shifter.

So Tim, the Cobras you drove had stock shifters in them? Or both? Maybe thats the deal, and I really appreciate the input on the subject...differnt views/experiances from different folks is what makes this a great place to hang out and learn things :nice: . So maybe its just me lol. Anyone else?

And Tom, the Ford T56 isnt just a M5 with an added OD. Its a differnt geared tranny....its designed with road racing in mind. = high 1st gear and close ratio 2-6. the viper/vette specs are essentially the same but 6th is .50 OD. and will fall on its face coming out of 5th to 6th. I agree TKO600 is the best bet.
That high 1st gear isnt the best for a launch at the strip, although alot of the KB guys like it with all their torque and say it really lets them get out there and pull.

2 of them still have their stock shifters on the T56s. The others are mixed between the Pro 5.0 and the MGW.

The T56 is quite the animal for a 6-speed, in my opinion. Tom mentions another fine product in the TKO 600. I have no qualms with that tranny either, other than it being vented towards a serious HP setup. Maybe the thread starter is not headed down that path...

ah but that's not the point i'm getting to, the T-56 spec is a dual overdrive.

most 6spds don't have a 2 overdrive gears. basically anything below 1.00-1.10 ratio (marginal) is an over drive.

Cobra spec T-56
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.80
6th: 0.63

what i'm trying to get is 4th gear on a t-56 is usually geared at 5th on other 6 speeds

all of you guys have opened my eyes on the whole tranny topic... The 4v motor that i am getting will have a eaton blower on it.. going with the eaton because they are cheap on ebay, and i already have a 10sec 347stroker in another car..So i wanna be fast but not too crazy. Going by the threads the t-56 is for me. I love to go to the drag strip and i also like to hit the high mph on the highway. But what is the best way to get my mustang wired up... how do i keep the factory gauges functional? or is that just not gonna happen? Is it true about what the one guy said about the 4.6 not having much lowend torque?
