Alright, quick question for you guys. I have an 88 GT w/5 Speed with an 85MPH speedometer. What are your recommendations on converting to a 140MPH speedometer. What is the cheapest, the easiest? Tried taking one out of a 90 GT and found out it was wired differently, but was it possible to get that cluster to work? Anyways, let me know anyway you guys know of. :nice:

Find one from an '89 GT, some of them had them- or you could get ballsey and try to score a Saleen 160. Good luck. The '90 and newer are different placement too (not that they won't bolt in) because of the airbag in the newer cars, the whole cluster is slightly different. You could also get a white face gauge kit in whatever top speed you desire, and try to find the appropriate speedo gear for the tranny. this is the most labor intensive, but you may find it's the cheapest.

Clusters from '90-'93 WILL work or just a '90-'93 speedometer WILL work.

This subject has been done several times. USE that handy little search feature.

What are those things worth? I had the motosports 160 in my car when I got it. Since I ripped out the dash, I have no Idea what I would use it for.

Hint hint nod nod.

It is physically in great condition. The spedo cable was not even connected when I bought this car. Guess they couldnt find the right spedo gear to match the 4.30's.

There are 5 ways to convert, depending on how much you want to spend and how much work you want to do and what look you want.

1) 89 140 speedo (edit: and Ford Motorsports 140) is easiest and probably most expensive. (supply & demand!) Drops right in, no other changes needed.

2) Send your 85 speedo to Brothers Performance and have it calibrated with new white face gauges. http://www.brothersperformance.com/shop/mustang/bbkcal1w.html

3) Get a 90-93 speedo and remove the speedo from the case. Remove the mechanism from the speedo face and put the 85 face on the 140 mechanism. Replace the 85 glue on face with a new 140 face, either stock 89 or white face gauges. There are several threads with more details on Stangnet about this.

4) use the complete 90-93 speedo, but you have to cut and file and drill the plastic face to fit the 87-89 cluster properly. The turn signal arrows are different, and the texture on the face is slightly different. This is what I did, but I got a 92 cluster for $20!

5) use the 90-93 cluster, but rewire the connectors so the gauges will work. Ford changed the wiring of the cluster when they added the airbag, so it is not a direct swap. Here is the wiring diagram showing the differences: http://statefilingsoftware.com/pictures/cluster87-93.pdf

Good luck!

Ford Motorsport also makes a 160 MPH speedo. A lot better looking than the Saleen 170's.

i recently had the same problem. it's very easy to use the speedometer from a 90-93 cluster. i have a soddering iron that has an attachment for a blade (got it at lowes for like $13) all the cutting i had to do for the plastic was very siply and easily done with a hot knife. i bought a set of gage faces and put them on and it looks great. took me a total of about 30 min? including the install of the faces.

Hey did you ever drive your car with it? Mine needs to be calibrated and I just wondered if you did it, or where you or the previous owner got it done.

I never did drive the car with the spedo hooked up. They had a rubber plug in the tranny, so I proceded to rip the dash out to make sure it did not work.

Damn, my needle isn't even on 0. It's on the 10 (?) MPH mark, or the one between 0 and 20. I drove it in my car, and it said I was going about 65 in a 50. Then it also said I was going about 35-40 when I know I was going about 25-30. I would really like to get it installed, looks nice and because people just think it can only go 85
