I was racing a turbocharged protege( that thing was fast as hell, he took me up top) and while going full throttle, i shifted into 2nd instead of 4th..i was at the top of 3rd gear..at what MPH did i shift into 2nd?also the car lunched back and banged the rev limiter..what damage could I of caused?also what are some tips for that to never happen again..i have the stock shifter, around town and daily driving my skills are perfect..mustang shifter is a little different for me as i drove a 98 z28 for 3years and it feels much different. Do i need a aftermarket shifter?is the key to "PULL STRAIGHT DOWN" ? this frickin sucks and im paranoid now when racing..please give me some helpful hints.

ewwwwww....a buddy of mine did that to his 00 SS camaro, and it never ran right agian! hrmmmm, I dont think you have nething to worry about tho...as the camaro didnt start after he did that!
I would look into a shifter...I recomend the steeda tri ax!

i did the very same thing just about a month ago. it was a week or 2 after i reinstalled my tri-ax.

same exact thing bounced rev & tires skidded some by that time i had reclutched. it drives fine.......but i know what you mean i dont know if it can take that too many times.
you probably did not do any damage but i heard of a guy in a 5.0 that bent a push rod????
i would think you could warp drive shaft, break U-joint or tear up almost anything in rearend...........i am just glad i did not have nitto's on when that happened.

yep its SCARY as hell.. my friend has a GT too and he did purdy much the same thing the day he got his car back from gettin his freakin 3650 tranny fixed. The thing is he was at the top of 2nd and he went to 1st :jaw: he was parniod for a while

Definitely get a Tri ax or other name brand after market shifter.
I did the old fourth to first in my car when it was less than 5,000 miles old. Now have 45K on it with the same T45. Also have a Tria ax.

Last year I did what you did at Willow Springs in a turn. Sideways at 90 is not fun........

I did that with my '01 GT when I'd only had it a few months. Locked the wheels and zinged the motor. I was terrified I'd ruined her. I ordered my TriAk the next day.

Fortunately nothing was damaged. I put about 40K more miles on before trading last Tuesday.

I've done it before also. My problem was that I wasn't pulling back AND a little to the right when giong 3-4. I was kindof just pulling straight back and it caught 2nd gear instead.

Scary feeling for sure...I pressed the clutch immediately though :(

I've never had trouble finding 4th with pulling straight back when I test drove stangs. I had trouble with 3rd though. It's kinda funny to be going 70 then go to shift and find the gear when you hit 40 MPH :) Takes the fun out of driving at that point.

I have a problem with 3-4 shift. At high revs and rpms sometimes the tranny will not engage into 4th. Twice I've let off the clutch when I get it into 4th and it would pop out violently making a loud bang and the engine would rev up really high. When I had my diablo chip in I did that and it revved up to 7500 rpms. I immediately reengaged the clutch. I was scarred!!!!!!!! But it's been fine. I've had a pro5.0 shifter for about 6 months and it's only happened once but I caught it as soon as it happened and reengaged the clutch. The other day I was bangin gears for fun practicing shifting and I made my 3-4 shift and when I let off the clutch the traction control engaged. I thought that was sweet especially if it was a 4th gear scratch. That was after I installed an Accufab upper elbow plenum.

I remember with my stock shifter.. I tried to race a white cobra once on the free way. I was in 5th, then put to neutral and wait for him. Then when he comes I put in 3rd (i thought) and punched it.. and it was 5th gear.. I was :bang: my head against the steering wheel.

It's kind of a good thing though..

stock shifter = reduce street racing

:owned: Haha i did the same exact thing the other day racing a Civic. But it was a CIVIC so i had enough time to find my gear and still whip his ass. Prolly could have taken him in 5th anyway tho.

I've never missed like that. I've shifted to fast a few times and the gears grind. That scares the crap out of me and it makes me sick to my stomach. You probably didn't do too much to it this time, but I bet that the engine won't stand up to that more than a few times.
