My 93 LX is acting strange It idles at about 1200rpm when i first crank the car and once it's had time to warm up if I stop somewhere and let it idle it runs anywhere from 500-800rpm. Any thoughts?

Once it is warmed up, turn off the car. Then unplug the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve on the throttle body. Start it back up, and adjust the idle to 850-1050 rpms (or your desired idle) with the adjustment screw. Then Shut the car off, and plug the IAC back in and drive. That should do it.

If not post back so we can try to help you some more.

So my car is supposed to idle low enough that it sputters? I don't think so. no car that i'm aware of is supposed to do that

Just raise the idle like I mentioned to get away from the too low idle. Stinger is right, it should start off at 1500 or so, and idle down to 800. But 500 rpm and hunting idle makes me think your base idle is set too low.

Did you say it sputters in your first post? No. You just said it idles down to 500-800 (which implies you don't know how low for sure). Don't be a smartass.

Sorry. I wasn't trying to be a smartass. I just ass/u/me d that any car that idled at 500 rpm would sputter and die.

Did you / have you tried just setting your base idle yet? If it doesn't work I have a few more suggestions...

Fair enough. For future information, many 4 cylinder cars idle between 500 and 600rpm.

If you changed the idle speed by turning the throttle set screw but didn't adjust your throttle position sensor (TPS), that's probably why your engine light is coming on. You need to adjust the sensor to return a voltage between 0.8V and 1.0V with the throttle closed.

If you aren't familiar with this procedure I'm sure you can find a write-up on here... if not let us know and I can give you the short version.
