i have just recently built up a 1968 289. before i built up the engine the car would idle in drive fine when coming to a stop and just sitting at a stop. now the car stalls almost every time that it comes to a stop and doesn't down shift automatically. it has a C4 transmission. any ideas as to how i can fix this problem.

have you replaced the intake?

be more specific by what you did, as 'built u' is very vague.

it sounds like a vacuum leak and maybe an improperly adjusted kickdown.

sorry the stock intake has been replaced with a weiand action plus intake, and it now has a 600cfm carb, the cylinders have been bored .030 over, and i am running a new more performance cam. that i cannot remember the specs on.

I think CraigMBA nailed down your problem to a T. That particular vacuum will cause your car to stall and affect shifting if it has a major leak.

The modulatar is located on the passenger side of your transmission body just before the trans. mount. It should have a short length of hose comming from it connected to a steal tube going up to the carb, follow it up and look for kinks or breaks. I have a 68 inline 6, mine connects again in the engine bay to a larger steal vacuum line that goes straight to the intake body below the carb. Check yours out and let us know if that was the problem.

Your kick down lever is on your driver side of the trans., connected upright to your neutral safety switch (has the wirers going to it), the lever has a very thin steal cable that connects it to the accelerator rod. There should be at least a 1" plus drop in this cable. The cable should only pull the kick down lever forward when your accelerator pedal is almost to the floor, have someone check that with you also with the engine off.

I don't know your expertise on these cars so I explained as simple as I could.
