I will have my bike sold this week and pick up a stang. Just in time for the Three Hills cruise to boot. I am looking at an 87 GT, it's rough. The hood flew open and smashed the windshield and destroyed the hood. The kid who owned it ruined the interior, it's real dirty and some panels are missing. The rods that hold the hatch open are shot and it needs paint. It's canary yellow has power locks/windows, air, tilt. The engine is recently rebuilt and strong, but the kid spray bombed the the upper intake black looks like crap. There is so much dirt in the engine bay you can't see where the firewall ends and the valve covers begin. But there is no rust or dents on the body, and the asking price is $3000.00, but I am going to offer him 2000.00 the way it is. What are your opinions?

I don't know all that much about buying and selling, but to me 3000 seems a little steep, if I were to sell my car I'd be asking 3000 and there's nothing wrong with my car, the interior is great, very very small amount of rust, fully loaded,
Is the fact that it's a GT and mine is an Lx make the difference between my car which is great all around and that car which seems to have only the 'GT' going for it?

I am going to go out on a limb here, and say that the fact the GT has the 5.0 engine, better tranny and 8.8 rearend, while yours has the 2.3L engine and associated running gear, makes up for the difference in price.

Speaking of tranny, the synchro's are gone out of third. When you downshift from fourth you have to move the stick to second and then to third. And it's making a noise while under load (the tranny), if you coast with the clutch engaged it doesn't make the scraping sound, as soon as you apply gas it starts to make the noise. I am beginning to think it's just not woth anything but a parts car.

I wouldn't pay 3000 for it. For a bit more you can get a perfectly functioning GT that doesnt need work done to it.

meh, You're the expert, not me. Just seems like it's a little too beat up to be paying 3000 for it

It is true that people think they can ask an arm and a leg for their Mustang just because it's a GT, but you gotta look a little further than that. From all the things you've mentioned, I think it might be too far gone, especially for 3G's. I'd point all these things out from a knowledgeable perspective (make the kid understand that you know your Mustangs), and then shoot him an offer of like $2000. Sounds like the thing needs a fair bit of interior work, plus a new tranny. but it's just a lot of little things. So in the end, it up to you how much work you wanna put into it.

I would question as to whether the engine was actually rebuilt or not. He might be the type that added a can of "Restore" and called it good. Usually when someone has an engine out they wash the engine bay. Just my opinion, I would be very wary.

I won't buy it unless he drops to like $1500. IMHO it's bunk.I have found a decent 86 GT for 2500. I'll prolly pick that up. Thanks for the advice.
BTW any1 going to the three hills cruise?

Ummm LX's were available with the 5.0 etc as well.

he was refering to the gt that this guy is looking to buy and the lx 2.3 that the other guy owns..

The "he" with the lx is a "she" and I know he LX models came with the 5.0l, I used to own an 87 LX 5.0L auto. I have also owned an 82 GT with T-tops, and a 76 Mustang II with a 5.0L. I bought those cars without really looking at them first and got owned on each one, the LX lasted almost a year with only going through two tranny's before the rear seal went. The body was rusted badly so I got rid of it. The 82 GT engine blew about two weeks after I got it, spun a bearing. The 76 Mustang II was condemned by the DOT in B.C about three months after I bought it. So my luck with stangs is all bad so far. But for some strange reason I still find myself attracted to the cars, I just need to get a good one from a reliable source. So as soon as I sell my dirt-bike (2002 RM-250 $4000.00) or find a car to trade on, I will be able to get another. I was hoping to make the three hills cruise, but I only have 6 days to pull it off now.

yes I am a girl, and yes I drive an 2.3L '89Lx and it's given me very few problems in the over 4 years I've owned it, sorry to hear you've had so much troubles, I like MY wussy little stang

You wanna talk about buckets? My 93 2.3L has cost me $3500 (!!) in repairs over the last three years. You name it, it's been replaced...and that's NOT including the price I paid for the car, or any stuff I've done to it like stereo, new paint, tint, wheels that kinda stuff. Why do I still own it you ask? Well it's practically a new car now lol and it will make a good solid project car when I get around to making it fast.

I could have bought a 90 lx 5.0 with nothing wrong 2 days ago for 2gs 13000ks so i would say no don't buy it. Just my 2 cents
