If you have done a PI intake swap (NPI heads) pleeeeze help me!!!!!!!!

I finally cracked the POS intake on my stock 96GT as long as i was swapping it, i wanted to do the pi conversion. but i dont know much about it other than the general info.
If anyone has a write-up of what i need to do or a website with on....instructions, pics, things to watch out for, i would reeeeeeeelly appreciate it.
I know some people use like appoxy or somthing like that and some people use an addapter gasket.....anyone know where i can find the gasket that fits?

BTW this is what i was thinking of ordering....i called the guy and he said its a full kit with absolutely averything i need.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7967259450&category=36474
can someone tell me if they see anything that is not listed that i might need? right now i need every pointer you guys can think of.lol :flag:

looks like a complete kit, you may need to buy an upper plenum gasket but thats it. that kit is even drilled and tapped already for us npi guys.....you could most likely piece the parts together cheaper cheaper but if your lookin for a no hassle kit there ya go, you can also pick up some plates on ebay for 100 bucks...the guy is on here under the name mr jones..he can provide you with info....so 320 for the intake kit and 100 for adapter plates.=420...thats 230 cheaper then livernois kit!

I agree completely! :nice: You can do it with or without the plates.

I was looking at the plates too......do you think its worth the 100bucks? im trying to keep the cost as low as possible, if you can get away just as well without them thats $100 for the next mod. Im sure it might make the instal easier because im sure everything will line up, but do you think there are any peformance gains with them?

Honestly, I do not think the plates are worth the $100.00 and there is no proof right now that the plates are making more power than the going without them. That is all I am going to say.

i was going to buy an intake spacer kit that comes with a new plenum gasket. I realize that the spacer will most likely not do anything noticible, but whatever...its worth the $20 and as long as im in there anyway.

i used the livernois kit, and was pretty happy with it. it came with the manifold tapped for the 2nd colant sensor, and complete instructions (that i didnt use), and all gaskets and plates i needed. i think the plates gave me a little TQ gain since i dont see alot of NPI or PI cars for that matter make as much RWTQ as my car.

Did you dyno-tune the car after the PI intake was installed? I'm considering the Livernois kit myself but I don't want to dyno-tune it after every mod. Those are some decent times for the HP and mods listed. :nice:

plates or not thats up to you. Feel free to use my site for instructions. it has pics and a write up.

I bought a set because i feel better about having some transition from the intake to the heads...BTW I will have before and after dyno results...just waiting for my new intake to arrive that has been ordered for 2 weeks now.

When i did my swap, i bought the intake from mustangtuning, $192 or so, and the gaskets and parts(waterpump ring, coolent tube, nipple, etc.) for ~$89 at a ford parsts dealer, free shipping plus some red rtv sealent and coolent at autozone. Did it myself so grandtotal of ~$300. Pretty good considering. If you need the adapter plates for comfort, make sure you don't have clearence issues, livernios' kit comes with a modified intake for clearance. I doubt its a problem though.

my plates do not require any manifold modifications. They are not as tall as Livernois plates. 1. I like this because the injector are only raised 1/4";this helps maintain good spray pattern. 2. If you remember a cheap little plate under the upper plenum was good for about 2hp so why cut this area for hood clearance if you don't have to (livernois kit).
I had my car dyno tuned with only my plates, manifold and a catted x-pipe I made 216rwhp, 266rwtq now bad with 3.90 gears.

i didnt have my car tuned but i did have it dynoed. with all the mods in my sig i was running 12.9-.3 A/F. my HP and TQ numbers are a bit low i feel, as the car wasnt warm when they ran it and i had bad o2's and a messed up EGR. not sure if those were effecting my numbers. as far as the manifold, if i had it to do over again i would have saved some money and got Mr. Jones' plates. the main advantage of the Livernios kit is the tapped manifold for the 2nd coolant sensor. makes a cleaner install IMO.

My car (1998) had a aluminum crossover in the non-pi manifold (ford recall). You can swap this to the new manifold; its a direct replacement. If your old manifold was all plastic then you can drill the new crossover and tap it with a 3/8" NPT (pipe tap).
You can also relocate the sensor to a water jacket on the block, then extend the wires.
Last option I know of is put a tee in the threaded hole that does come in the new manifold and install both sensors there.
I will try and update my install site to show some of these alternatives.

Since the write up is pretty detailed here ( www.unitedmajority.com ) already I'll just post my experence.

The only real problems I had was the second bolt on the coolent tube. I used a 1/4 wrench with a 8mm socket to get it off...about 1/4 turn at a time.

The only other real problem was tapping for the second coolent sensor. Since I have a 96 the plug in the block was not an option since it is blocked by the motor mount. Tapping proved to be a chore because NO ONE has a 3/8 NPT tap. I went to auto parts stores, tool stores, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears...nothing. I stopped at my neighbors performance shop and he had one. Finally got it all in shape today.

Suggestions:
Label EVERYTHING. I took some tape and as I removed each connector or vacuum tube I put a breif description of what it was, attached it to the wire/tube, numbered it as a step and wrote it down on paper. When replacing everything just follow your numbers and cross them off when you have reconnected it. Saves you from forgetting to attach a vacuum line or injector plug.

I also put each set of bolts I removed from the plenum, intake, strut tower brace etc. into little Ziplok snak baggies and labled those too.

To install the intake I took the NPI gaskets, placed them on the heads then placed the adapters onto the gasketss then put a little dab of RTV every few inches to hold it in place. I'll upload pics of what I'm talking about later. I did the same with the PI gaskets on the PI manifold. You have to let it dry for about an hour and a half but you can chill and have a beer or two while you are waiting. When placing the manifold on the heads the gaskets stayed in place and I didn't have trouble with them slipping.

Don't forget to pop the little placement tabs off of the PI gaskets. They will keep the gasket from setting onto the adapter plates correctly.

Now for the good part...NO LEAKS. I started it up ( threw a No. 2 misfire code but the car has been sitting for a week with the cracked manifold) and ran it for about 30 minutes at idle while I went in and ate dinner. I then left the driveway and did a nice little burnout. Once I got to an open road I nailed it and it pulls all the way to redline. Does drop off a bit at around 5700 but that is about a grand more rpm range than I had before.

So for the manifold I paid $192 (free shipping) from Mustang Tuning, $112 (shipped) for the mrjones1/United Majority adapter plates and $64 (shipped) for the necessary components to install the intake (coolent tube and nipple, PI gaskets, water pump and therm. gaskets and upper plenum gasket etc.) from Randy Stinchcomb of Liberty Ford. Grand total of $368 for a job that would cost over a grand at the dealer. And is ALOT less than the "other" PI swap kit on the market.

good stuff, i have already started the swap and right now just came inside after finnishing bolting up and tqing down the new intake manifold. I like those plates a lot, but i just didnt have the time to order them. I was in florida all last week and when i came home had to get right to work...i need my car. I used a little RTV around the coolant ports with PI gaskets...hopefully it wont leak. If it does though and i gatta take everything out again, no doubt im going to get Mr.Jones plates.
