I was wondering if anyone could help me out.. i need to pop the old ignition cylinder out of my 66 and cant figure out how to do it. the original keys are lost :(

any instructions would be appriciated

Can't without the keys. With the keys, you used a paper clip inserted in the hole. Just pull the whole switch assembly and change it. If you can get a Motor Repair Manual (64-70) it's got all the old tricks in detail. Barnes&Noble .com---- look in the used, out of print section.

If you have a key, insert it and turn it in the lock to "ACC." Insert a paper clip into the tiny round hole and push against the spring loading. Pull on the key and the lock cylinder comes out. Reach inside the dash and push the switch body toward the dash against the spring loading, and turn it counterclockwise (apparently clockwise from the outside) about 15 degrees. The whole thing comes apart, bezel and switch body and an outer cylinder part too.

Since you don't have a key, I'd say either get a locksmith to make a new one, or bang a screwdriver in the slot and use it like a key. But before you do that, wait on this thread for the possibility that someone might have a better idea. Once you resort to destructive force, there might be no way back.

Edit: I just remembered reading a news story about the rash of thefts of '90's and '00's Hondas and Toyotas, that the kids take a random key and file it down to make a master key which works on multiple vehicles. My understanding is that they just smooth off the high spots, they don't completely file them down to nothing. I don't know if this will work in an old car, but I don't see why not.

Remember, those keys with the same pattern on both edges, only one edge at a time is working. With the vintage Fords with the two-sided keys, you can take a key blank and cut your igntion key on one side and your trunk key on the other.

ya the key i lost was the original and was worn down alot so i might try finding an old one and filing it...unless anyone else has a better idea?!?

In a last ditch effort you can use a slide hammer with a screw attached to the end of it.

CAUTION, this method also ruins the inside of the ignition switch so it (the switch) will need to be replaced as well. Won't scratch or hurt anything else if you are careful.

Just screw it into the tumblers and with one small wack, no more tumblers to contend with.

I had the same problem - I used a battery drill (lots of control) and an 8mm drill bit (or whatever crazy inch size is closest). Then drill carefully down the centre of the barrel. You might need to open it out afterwards with a 10mm bit.

I suggest you order the replacement barrel first, then you can see how far you need to drill - there is a semi-circular tab on the end that you just want to reach with the drill, then it just falls out.

Check often - don't go charging in; you need to keep straight. If you go in too far you'll need a new switch.

Good luck.

That doesn't work on all two sided keys, with some, the trunk key is bass-ackwards from the door/ignition key and nether will slide into the slot of the other.
