Long story, but here it goes. Last June (2011) I had a shop install the trick flow top end kit for me. Had endless problems with it and in September I broke down at the beach. Turns out my cam gear was sheered to nothing. (at that point in time I had no idea how to work on a car myself). So trick flow sent me a new cam and a couple buddies of mine in the fox game helped me get it back together. This was in January I believe. Issues continue with the car. I finally realize its losing ignition timing. Going from base 10* to zero. I reset it a couple times to confirm this was the issue. So I pull it apart to find the dowel pin was forcing the washer (that holds the cam sprocket on) out. The washer was indented, warped, and cracked. So I made a new one and got a new dowel pin. My buddy found a sweet deal on a supercharger for me so I decided to pick that up and get a custom ground can while I was at it. SO, fast forward to June when I finally have everything I need to install the new cam and supercharger. I pulled the cam out and it was sheering like the first cam had done, awesome. We throw everything together and get the engine running with the new custom cam and blower. Well, it seems I had a blown head gasket or a least on its way out so I tore it down AGAIN. While it was apart I shined a flashlight to check out the cam gear and to no surprise (I've had HORRIBLE luck since I started modding) the gear is just starting to being cut away like the last two. This is a billet custom cam from FTI. Apparently I'm supposed to use a bronze dizzy gear with a billet cam and was not aware. I just got the bronze gear on and have been watching the timing after every single drive and it's been fine. This morning I took the car out for an hour and got on it a few times to pass people. I checked the timing when I got home and it was retarded again, at zero. I pulled the dizzy out and the bronze gear is fine. The dizzy hold down was as tight as I could get it. Can somebody tell me why this is happening to me and why my cam gears are getting eaten up. In stock form the car never had a single issue and the stock cam shows no sign of abnormal wear. Everything has been downhill since I took it to that "good" shop.

Steel roller cam = steel distributor gear.

By this point in time you may need to replace the camshaft and the distributor gear at the same time to correct the problem.

It's only an inch or two. What's the big deal?

X2. I had the same problem years ago. Changed out cam and distributor gear, replaced distributor(worn out)... never had to bother with it again.

I was running a steel gear and the gears were being eaten up on the cam, yet the dizzy gear remained fine.

The premise is that both the camshaft and the distributor gear must be made of the same material.

Flat tappet cams are usually cast iron, while roller cams are steel. Use a iron gear a with a steel gear and you will have problems like the ones you are describing.

Once one of the gears start to deteriorate, it can damage the other gear so that any gear run against it will also be damaged.

We must be misunderstanding each other lol I ran a steel distributor gear with all 4 cams (including stock cam) and all the cams aside from the stock cam were damaged.

Were you running a roller tappet cam on all these occasions?

Is it a billet cam? I just ordered a cam from fti, and it says to run stock distributor gear.. I got the cheapest cam( not billet).. So I would think with a billet cam the distrib gear is prob different.

Yes it's billet. Ed didn't specify which gear to use but I've heard from others to use a bronze gear on a billet cam but I believe its too late.
