i got a daily driver 89 mustang lx....i`m looking for a good msd ignition set up..mainly looing for a coil and box can anyone help?

MSD = May Suddenly Die... I wouldn't have one unless it was free.

The stock ignition is good up to 400 HP without NO2 or forced induction. If you don't have them or plan to get them, spend your money elsewhere.

jrichker i have a msd coil on my stock 95 GT (paid $55) is it a waste of money, i replaced stock thinking i would increase volts creating bigger spark to help detonation and increase mid range RPM power and smoother idle. what is your opinion, (i'm guessing the stock coil puts out enough volts to do all this ,right.)

You got it...

The detonation or pinging at cruse, 1700-2500 RPM, may be due to a malfunctioning EGR valve. That's my problem. I still haven't chased the electrical problems that have caused it.

ok, so if im reading this right, i should have close to around 400 at the flywheel before the juice. so i wont be wasting my money. good to know.

i don't have any pinging problems.only problem i have is a small rough idle(i about have this worked out) i believe this is normal in the 5.0s. and some small backfiring at startup when it's cold out don't know if it would do it if i drove it everyday i only crank and/or drive it about every 2-3 weeks, whats your opinion (normal)?

I woudn't use MSD (Except for Wires) if someone paid me....Alot of there stuff especially the 6A and 6AL boxes etc. are old technology. I used to work in a performance shop and the amount of MSD products that came in under warranty was just ridiculous. I used to run MSD, and I finnaly had enough and started running Crane ignition components and have not once had a problem. Currently I'm running Crane's new Electronic Distibutor, HI6 Box & PS92 Coil and I have been very impressed.

I wouldn't even use their wires (bad experience)

I got my box used and for a resonable price this winter. I haven't driven the car yet. All I know is the idle is now more stable than when it was.

I have had no problems with my MSD stuff at all.

I hear good things about the high end MSD products such as the Digital 6. I've heard more negative comments about the 6al and 6a.

I totally agree, everyone has an opinion. Opinions are like noses because everyone has one. And to be honest, I haven't tried them since 1996 so maybe things have changed.

Currently it's Crane or Accel products for me.

The digital 6 is a great box, especially if you are running nitrous.

Man, i knew i wanted crane stuff, and this kinda helped me along. The only reason i wanted MSD in teh first place was because of all of the plug and play stuff that was available. like the timing retard and junk... anyone know if crane has or is coming out with that stuff?

Crane has Timing retard control. You have to mount it in the cockpit and run some wires to the box, but it has to be similar to the MSD stuff (I haven't compaired the two)

actually, now that i think about it, i have to get the accessories for either a WOT switch / window switch, for the juice later on

Interesting stuff here.

I have a Jacobs on my Capri that I installed in 1986 or so. It has worked perfectly ever since. It did give me at least one mpg improvement, and the car will still get 21 mpg. Couldn't get it out of the 15's though...

However, their phone tech help then was awful, and has gone downhill over the years. The current guys don't know anything about the older ones. So I probably wouldn't go there.

I was surprised when my my 82 went 12's on the motor with a 70-something Duraspark box plugged into it.

It also seems to handle the 7.80 sprayed runs in the eighth mile with the 100 shot. I do have Taylor wires and swear by them.

Been thinking MSD Digital 6 to see if it improves anything.

a buddy of mine put a newer jacobs box on his thunderbird (he had an allen engine development S/C on it) and it never worked right. he put the stock ignition back in, and everything was fine. they sent him a new one, and it did the same thing. so he just kept the stock stuff, and now that makes me leary to buy anything from them. and thats surprising for how much thier products are

I just got an MSD 6Al box for Christmas and installed it with the MSD TFI coil, and to tell ya what, it helped surface a problem with my FRPP 9mm wires which are brand new. The number 4 wire was arcing so bad WHILE MOUNTED to my plug I could hear it popping over my supercharger and exhaust inside my car! With the stock components the problem didnt surface until 5k in the RPM range. If you ask me, this is the PERFECT example as to a benefit of an aftermarket ignition. The reason I got the MSD was simply that very many people run their ignitions which has to be a testament. I have subscribed to 5.0 Mustang mag since Nov, 1997 and in a recent article of the shootout they do with 10 vehicles to see what the best mustang thier readers own 9 out of 10 ran MSD. Says something for its rep. As far as the tech being old, nothing on my car is worthy of a new tech magazine.... The SCT is the only thing that is amazing, but even that is integrated with the antiquated A9L. I know new tech can improve old, but by what margin or what percent. If you want MSD, get it. I love mine.
