Igntion advance on stroker

About my second cam, it's CCA-31-452-8.

Specs :
Basic Operating RPM Range 3,000-6,500
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift 230
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift 230
Duration at 050 inch Lift 230 int./230 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration 290
Advertised Exhaust Duration 290
Advertised Duration 290 int./290 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.544 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.544 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.544 int./0.544 exh.

My ex-engine BAD engine builder replaced that by Ford FMS-M-6250-E303.
Because, according to what he says, the CompCams was too strong for the stock engine starter.
By the way, I replaced that by Tilton.
After several months, I asked CompsCams and they told me that the problem is not the last cam but the ignition advance...

I don't know if it's adjustable...
If fact, all rocker arms are not tightened.
Can I use the same spec of the SM Ford book ??

Hi Reef,

Maybe I missed this, have you mention your type cam and valve train? That is, hydraulic roller or flat tappet? I'm just not familiar with Comps lettered cams, as I only run custom built cams and are hydraulic rollers.
Adjusting valves is another conversation, in itself.
Getting back to your advance..... after you get that new steel gear replaced, from all that's been stated, you can probably start with the 12-14 initial to start (as someone else mentioned). So, if I read this correctly, you are running the "2nd" cam? BTW, as I think you stated, this is a street car, that second cam is a much better choice.

I made a special tool to remove with safety the pin but a can't remove de gear...
I'll try again this weekend...
How do you know the advance ?
By practice and testing ?

Popymod, I seen that you have Eibach spring on your stang.
Do you know the Parts number ?

I've 620 from Magna and it's hard everytime.
I believe that the Eibach springs are progressives. Confortable in street and good on track.
I ask the exclusif dealer here but they don't know the US cars...
Last year, I was in Poway, just near Bilstein but I was busy to ask them about combi shockabsorber/spring.

Yes the Eibachs are progressive. Very nice ride and adds the handling when needed. I think I purchased them from Mustangs Plus in CA, USA.

Regarding the advance, most of the recommendation are derived from testing. As a little primer, you have 3 advance scenarios. 12-14, is a usual starting point with most "warmed" up. But, keep in mind the following. The second and 3rd scenarios have to be taken into consideration, especially, #2 which can add up to 10 degrees to the mid-range.

1st. initial ( as vied by the timing light)

2nd. vacuum advance (as adjusted within the vac. canister of the dizzy, usually equates to 1 turn equals 2 degs.)

3rd. mechanical built into the dizzy (somewhat adjustable.depending?)

About springs, yes Mustang Plus has progressive spring "home made" for his grabber.
But it is not Eibach, I think.

His catalog is rich now compared more ten years ago... :)

Hi Reef,

I went back through my records (over 10 years old now), I could not locate the number. I too, went through my latest catalog and did not see them listed. Perhaps, they do not list them under the Eibach name. You might send them an email or contact Eibach directly. But, I'm quite sure I purchased them from Mustang Plus, as all of my suspension components were from them.
I liked the Eibach springs so much, that I retained them when I changed over this past summer to a complete TCP front suspension setup. I thought about the coil-overs from TCP, but, didn't want to take the chance with a new spring setup. I apologize, I couldn't help more.

The only thing that matters is total advance at about 3,000-3,400 rpm. It should be about 34 to 38 deg. The initial advance depends on what bushing you have in the MSD dist. Most cars with bigger cams like 20 deg total in the MSD dist for best idle and 14-18 intial. If the cam has a decent idle you can put more advance into the dist and reduce your initial advance to 10-12 deg. for easier starts and less chance of engine ping at low rpm
