Also Michael, you can take a peep at this thread. I talked a tidbit about the PIP, stator, Hall Effect sensor ..... whichever one you want to call it.

You'll notice that replacing the whole distibutor as one piece is also an option if you want a little less hassle and don't care to pay the $$$.
thats the problem...i dont wanna spend all my xmas money on stupid **** that isnt gonna fix the problem..i wanna get rid of my 4x4'ness.....:rlaugh: ive got a checklist of **** to to thru tomorro morn to sort this out....thanks for teh info btw:nice:

Sound like you inherited the dread PIP stator failure. What I would do first is when it's missing pull the plug wires off one by one. If you pull one wire off and the syptom stays the same, then thats your problem cylinder (plug or wire). But my $$ on the PIP stator being bad. To remove it you will have to press the sprocket off the dizzy and most break (old age/many hours of heat), I just went to Ford and picked up a new one. The PIP itself is only about $20 from the parts store if you wish to try you may just get lucky.

ill give that a shot man...this morn when i drove it, it did the same thing you described at the stoplight...it was idling at about 600 and then it dropped to like 200 for a sec like it was gonna die...and went back....

Make sure your wires are not touching anything metal. When you motor gets hot the wires get flimsy and can end up toching against metal and arcing.
My car was running fine and I happen to be under the car listeneng for exhaust leaks and noticed a spark arcing from the bottom of the boot againt the block. I put on a boot cover and it stopped and also the car ran smoother. This was doing it on my #2 plug b/c it was by the turbo and it was getting hot. I would have never have known this if I wasn't under the car. These kinds of problems always end up being a simple fix and very basic.

yea i really need to check again....ive gone through EVERYTHING though, and i REALLY cannot afford to bring it to a shop...im in enough debt as is it is.....like a month before this problem started happening, i installed new autolite plugs, cap, rotor, o2 sensors, and fuel filter.....then my dad realized my plug wires were shot, so i got new ones, and the problem went away for 2-3 weeks....then it came back last week at some point.....:nonono:

i had a similar problem my son replaced my plugs it had a skip and when reved high backfired alot on decel.i pulled and checked the plugs they were gapped .042 from manufacture and salesperson told him gap was already preset he just replaced them without checking specs.. i reset gap at .052 replaced problem solved, just a little info. hope it helps.

Were your old wires touching or melted anywhere?
Could be happening at the same spot. Just make sure your plug boots are fine and snug snapped all the way on the plug and not slipping off when they get hot. Make sure they don't rub on the headers anywhere also. If it happens again at night or if you have a dark garage , look for spark/arcing under the hood from the top and close the hood and peek from beneath at both headers where. You will be able to see the plugs more clearly under the car.

yea ima check that out again...i dont understand how it could become so random like that though....ran great with the moroso wires i had on the car when i bought it....changed the plugs, rotor, and cap, and it ran GREAT after that for about a month or so....like 100x better than before the tune up....then this started happening...

well while its running try to disable each cylinder and see if get any change in the idle quality. i like to unplug each injector, better than getting zapped by spark. but u could also try pulling each spark plug boot off enough to disable that cylinder if u cant get to the injector connector. hopefully this will help u determine if u have a specific cylinder misfire or just a bad idle.

thanks dude, will do....its a pain in the ass cause i dont get home from work til 6, and by then its dark and freezing out.....

Very good ideas from people on here.

A cylinder balance test will tell you if there is a substantial miss and if it is relegated to one cylinder. It is quick and easy too.

Or you could wait for your new buddy on the fox side to tell you how stupid you are, and what the problem is. :rlaugh:

Good luck Michael.
