Index bellhousing

I have a McLeod bellhousing I am trying to index. Im not sure if I did it right, but I came up with the same numbers 2 or 3 times so it must be close. Starting at the 12 o clock position at 0, I got .009 at 9 oclock, .011 at 6 o clock, and .003 at 3 oclock. What dowel pins do I need and which way should I turn them? My guess would be the .007 pins and move the bellhousing down and a little to the left. Is that close to right? Thanks


Also, this bell came with a couple rings that Im guessing go in the center where the input shaft go through. Do I need to use those?

I second it needing to be down and left, what dowels i dont know. I know Paul might know as he has been through this, so maybe he will chime in. Ill be doing the same thing soon so i'll be tuning in for the answer.

Well I ordered a set of .007 dowels earlier, so I hope that's right.

The .007 pins may be just enough to get it into spec. You'll see when you get them that it is nearly impossible to know which direction to turn them, while under the car putting them in I could not tell which was the high side and which was the low on the dowel. I just stuck them in, measured and turned it 180* to see which way it went, then I knew which direction I needed to go with it. One I got it and since I was doing this under the car I made a paint line from the pin to the bell and I also used a punch to knick the dowel and the bell where they met so that I could re-install it correctly the next time. If I had the bell and engine out of the car I would have carefully drilled a hole in from the side of the bell and tapped the dowel for a screw. Many an engine builder suggested this to me because it makes it a perfect fit every time. It'd be a bitch to do it under the car though where you can see squat.
