hi i have a turbo and i want to use it on my carbed notch. i have an edelbrock 600 cfm carb. what is a blowthrough carb and what are the differences between an untouched carb and a modded blow through carb. what would i have to do to make mine a blowthrough or would i have to get a holley. i know i need new jets and thing but what else needs to be modded for the carb to handle boost with no problems

hey

yeah, go to www.turbomustangs.com and they have a whole section on blow-thru carb/turbo engines :) That was what i was working on until I had to sell all of my parts for some money for school and to get my car running.

a holley or demon carb would be a better choice for a carb, and the holley will probably be easier for you to use :) :salute:

There are a lot of awesome cars on www.tm.com, one carb/turbo coupe is pushing over 800hp/tq, and w/ his new setup, it'll be more :)

Thanks for the referral!
Sorry, but that Edelbrock has to go, and no you can't use a Demon either because the shafts arent sealed. I also dont recommend using a used Holley either because the shafts are used along with the rest of the carb obviously. I suggest a 650-750 DP depending on your engine size and max RPM. And really the only difference between a standard carb and a blowthrough is just some simple mods. Of course if your going to run some insane boost and power then you really need to get the carb professionally done. Basic things that need to be done to keep the carb from ruining everything is to replace the floats with solid nitrophyl floats because the bowls will get pressurized from the air and a standard brass hollow float will crush. Next, you need to mill off the whole choke assembly including all the walls around it because it impedes flow too much. You can do this with a dremel or rotary air saw or whatever. Then your secondary jets need to be really fat to give that extra gas at higher boost and rpms. Lastly, your fuel pump needs to be boost referenced to the boost pressure so that you increase fuel pressure 1 psi per 1 psi of boost. So that standard mech. pump pressure is 8 psi at idle, then 9 lbs of boost equals 17 total fuel psi. These are standard mods anybody can do in their garage but if your really looking for power or boost then I recommend going with a pro. I did all the above and got the car running great but the carb really ran out of A/F at 5000 rpms so its currently at a pro and I should have it back by tuesday. You can either buy a new holley and get it running with those mods and see how it does and then maybe get it pro modded later, or you can just buy a prepped blowthrough carb from a pro. Most shops charge between 400-650 to build a BT carb, or you can buy one from them for around $800.
Check out www.TPCracing.com which is where my carb is right now and they charged me $425 or www.customcarbs.com which I believe they wanted $650. Both places will work fine and they both sell prepped carbs, and they are both located in SoCal. You'll also need a carb hat and I recommend Extreme Velocities and so will any pro because of the internal flow baffling. The hats run $200 and are polished aluminum, this may seem pricey but if you did a carb enclosure-those run $600. But to be honest, you may not want to run a turbo on a 60 over 302 with milled E7s unless you are planning on another engine anyways. I'm assuming your pistons are forged at least. Hope this helps, Scot Rod

not sure yet but i have pics but i can not figure out how to post, who wants to post them for me. i have a post on turbostangs for it with pics there. actually a friend posted. the intake housing says garrett and and the center section is an airesearch.

check this out, the pics are here, it does not have a wastegate and it is off of some sort of diesel.

That's a bunch of mestup info :bang:

Yes, you CAN run a Demon carb or Holley. Sure, a performance built carb would be nice, but it isn't needed either. Perhaps if you have a block that can actually take over 500hp, I'd invest in a $800-1000 carb, but otherwise I wouldn't.

Several people on www.turbomustangs.com have bought a $15 used carb, rebuilt it, and had it ready to go for under $100.

i'm just going to sell the turbo and try to get an air gap intake
anybody wanna trade a weiend street avenger 4 bbl. intake for a 302, it is in perfect condition, i wanna trade for an air gap intake

There was a mag article a while back about that box that seals the whole carb and puts the whole thing under boost, so you dont have to worry about the shaft seals and what not. It was either MM or 5.0 and they had great results with an regular demon carb.

I didnt say a built carb was totally necessary, but recommended. Once you are making over 10 lbs you really dont want to use a retarded old carb. Because it takes modifying of the boosters and the emulsifier tubes to get the A/F right as boost is building. Trust me, I would know. I had a stock Holley 700 with the regular BT mods and it was safe until boost starting building and no matter how much jetting we threw in nothing worked so the carb is off and being done by a pro. Also, using a used carb can be hit or miss if the throttle plate or anything else is warped and not everybody has the means to machine a surface flat or the know-how to even rebuild or modify a Holley. When it comes to playing with boost its not smart to flirt with disaster.
