Info on taking out my stereo (shaker 500)

I need to know what's involved in removing the stereo in this car. I'm replacing it with an OEM Ford Nav system (the only option I did not get). From my research, the nav system is a shaker 500 and it plugs right in. Got the nav system for only 725 on Corral. Better then 2K factory option!

remove the console. there are two screws in the back of the storage compartment, and two up front. click the hurst link in my sig. i have pics of the screws there. you will also need to remove the two trim pieces from the sides of the center stack. i am sure you can figure it out with about 3 seconds of looking at it. then you will see the screws that hold in the radio.

i dont know if there are any programming issues with this swap. i would assume so, since you cant even swap shaker 500s without programming.

Ok, what happens when you swap for an aftermarket stereo? I know you don't have to reflash for that.

swap for aftermarket is just like any other normal stereo swap, IIRC. you only need to program the ford units if you want them to function properly. aftermarket units contain all the programming they need to be universal, and are not vehicle specific like these ford units are.

svttech76 should be able to let you know for sure, as he works at a dealership and deals with this information more than most of us.

in the TSBs, they mention to review section 415-01 in the workshop manual for removal and installation. this section may tell you any programming needs.

Ok, I got the Nav head unit today. It plugs RIGHT in where the 500 goes. It turned on and works good, except there is no GPS signal because there is no GPS antenna in my car. Everything else DOES work just fine with the head unit though. I will have to say one thing I did notice is that the sound quality is not as good as the base Shaker 500.

The Nav system is made by Pioneer, and I have searched online and found that the newer/newest Pioneer NAV systems use what looks to be the exact same plug in antenna that I need. So tomorrow is my day off, and I will let you guys know if I find an antenna locally and let you know how it works out. If it all works out, I will go ahead and do a write up on how to/what you need to convert your Shaker 500 to a factory Ford Nav unit.

Ok, I DO need a GPS antenna... and I found one on ebay that's specifically made for the Ford OEM NAV system. I ordered it today and it should be here this week. I will let you guys know how it all works out!

Well, it is installed. Just no GPS yet... which means the nav and map is off... But here are some pictures I just took of it...
