inner tie rod R&R

On what kind of 5.0 car?

If it's a Fox Mustang, mine were just spring bands that I could open a bit and move. If your are clamps, go ahead and cut them off. Take them to an auto parts store and match them up to be replaced.

The two inner tie rod ends are usually what wears out, and at $45 each, it's better to get a replacement rack assembly since they are part of the package. The rack is about $100 + a $40 refundable core charge, which you get back when you return the old rack. Be sure to ask for the GT or high performance rack, it has fewer turns lock to lock than the standard rack.

I vote to change the whole thing. I last did a short rack, $100. Before I was done, I had $25 more in bushings, and an hour to change the boots and tie rods. The complete rack and inner tie rods was $119.

The inners are a pain because you have to remove the rolled pin from the blind hole in the inner nut. Takes pliers, a pick, a screw and, or the factory tool, a screw with a slide hammer. Annoying.

yeah its a92 lx, I did one years ago on an 87 gt ,but I dont remember the rolled pin, what i remember was just using that long pipe like socket but thanx for the heads up.BTW ,the price i got for the inner was only $ 28.00
at autozone ,since there is nothing wrongwith my rack I prolly will try just replacing only the inner that is bad,its just minimal play but the inspection stations around here will flunk it for that much.

I agree with others about replacing the rack, but we respect your opinion (just try to evaluate whether other rack parts are going to fail soon as well).

I also have spring loaded clamps, but if yours kinda look like the Greek letter Omega, I have to just cut those off with some sidecutters, and then use a spring loaded clamp afterwards (I prefer those over worm gear clamps since the spring loaded clamp does not have perferations which can chew up the articulated dust boot).

Good luck.
