install catback w/o car off ground

well my dads wierd about these things, he wont allow allow me to go under my car when its on jacks, so the only time i can work on my car is under the hood, or with it on all 4 wheels. i just ordered my catback today and i was wondering if i could change it w/o lifting it. if not then the shop has to do it. thanks.

You're going to have to at least get the rear end jacked up. Get some hefty jack stands and wheel chocks. He should be ok with that.

I did mine with ramps no problem, I know that is still off the ground but they are more secure than most jacks, plus they don't get in the way when you are doing the install

Jack stands are safe... having the car rest on a hydraulic jack while your underneath it is retarded. Buy some stands and you should be good to go.

Buy some freeging sturdy jack stands. You will feel safer that way.

Jack Stands are cheap and much safer than sliding under the car with just a jack holding it up.

What they said. Your dad is right, working on a car that is only supported by a jack is retarded. And your going to need the car in the air to do a catback.

You will NEED it up in the air. Doing that while on the ground is not going to be possible.

Even if your skinny enough to get under there, it is IMPOSSIBLE to fish the tail pipes out from over the axle unless its on stands or something..

lol, I've really considered doing that. My parents are the same way, I'm not allowed to get under a lifted car at all. I respect that since they did give me the loan for the car in the first place. If you just can't, you might have to bring it to a shop and have them do it. They shouldn't charge you that much anyways.

Drop a few roofies in your dad's Saturday morning milk ... then do what needs to get done.

My dad always encouraged me to climb under cars ..... especially when they were unstable.

Tell you one thing ... you better run out and put some 36" swampers on those rims.

Here's one thing I found that really helps when working with exhaust. Goes in easier, and comes apart REAL easy without ruining anything!

The clamps are what makes it easy. I cut my over axle pipes behind the axle and clamped with these clamps. Also clamped the pipes to the back of the mufflers. In easy, out easy when you need to work with it. Clamps are reuseable.

If you do find a way to get under there and do it, make sure to re-check the bolt tightness in a week or so. I helped a guy do a mid-pipe swap without jackstands/ramp on an SN-95, and because of the difficult angle, it was hard to get torque specs correct.

I don't mind working under one end of a car, but getting the entire thing up high enough on jack stands to work under makes me paranoid as hell. All it takes is too much push one direction (and the torque numbers for some under-car components are three digits!) and the entire thing falls on you. Ask some guys on here for their stories about cars falling off in the garage and you will agree with your dad. I installed my own offroad H-pipe and then drove it to the muffler shop to install the rest, was way worth the 20 bucks he charged me.

When i install cat-backs, i only do it with the rear end up on ramps. I block the front wheels, put jack stands under the axle and use a jack to lift the body slightly to pull the tailpipes over the axle.
