Is there any other trick or possible way in hell that I could install my fully assembled motor minus the accsessories into the engine bay? I need an engine hoist but cant afford one right now and I just moved into town and I dont know anyone with one I could use or rent...

I honestly don't see how you could possibly without a hoist unless you used a strong tree with a chain and a come-along. You don't have any tool rental places around?

i've did it many of times...

find a tree or a rafter(if you have a garage) and get a "come-a-long" or a set of pullies and chain

and you have to remove the hood

I did it the NON redneck way. I bought the RIGHT tool for the job. I picked up a nice hoist from pep boys for $99 after rebate. If you can't afford that, you can't afford to modify your car.

i NOW have a Cherry Picker but at the time i wasn't about to buy one, due to lack of money.

i used the "come-a-long" method for many engine swaps, i even changed the motor in a Fiero, twice. this was the the biggest PITA ever

There is nothing wrong with not having a hoist. It is silly to use that assumption of not having one to say you can't afford to modify the car. Have we not all shortcutted somewhere at some point or for something? Exactly!

If you can borrow a hoist (ask a local mechanic) that would be more ideal but not necessary.

I think I can more than afford to modify my car sukker, nice personal attack, Im in TX and most of the rental places around want close to 100 to rent for a day. I dont wanna rent one for a day for that much when summit has them shipped for under 150. What is a come along? I have no trees close by the car is in the garage but the garage is a finished one with ceiling and paint and carpet and such. I guess I will have to wait till I get my pay check in 2 weeks

No problem. I used a pawn shop come along, (hand winch) that I got for $3. I had to pay $5 for a hook and shackle for the cable.

I put a 1/2 in lag bolt into the beam above my garage door and pulled the engine that way.

It works, but it is scary, with your engine hanging in the air by one piece of quarter inch cable.

The pain in the butt part is that you have to move the car under the engine, so you have to support the transmission so you can roll the car around.

The upscale version uses three 4x4's, one as a beam and two for posts at the side, with some 2x4 bracing to keep it stabilized. Then connect the come along to the beam. Still have to jockey the car under the engine.

It takes more time, and you have to be very careful so as not to get hurt, or damage anything, but it works.

After doing this a half dozen times, I now have a hoist.

More info, you have to have the garage door all the way up and back on the track to get the cable up past the bottom of the door to the beam or lintel above the head of the door. If you don't have a heavy enough lintel, you can use the door opening to frame and stabilize your 4x4's.

My other preferred method is to use my neighbors backhoe, but it is not always available.

my buddy used to do it all the time off the rafters in his garage, used a come along and a pulley. one time he and his friend disassembled a motor and lifted the shortblock out by hand and with some jacks. they also took off the bumper/bumper cover.

I once flipped an engine backwards out of the car (shortblock) onto a skateboard, lifted the car like mad and rolled the motor out underneath. Not recommended and it was a miracle my flywheel survived that. BUT I guess you could lift the frame, unbolt your front k-member (puts wheels) and mount the engine to that then crazy lift the frame and push the motor underneath using the front suspension as a dolly. That would be something to brag about. Would make some nice pictures too.

All you need is 2 floor jacks.

I knew Pete would have some crazy story, though I thought it might involve a rollerskate, a midget and zip ties.

Since you are in texas, get a cheap engine hoist from harbor freight or northern tool (retail store).
