Installed fuel pump without strainer...Okay?

So I got around to putting in my 190lph FP today. It's a summit brand part, but of course it's made by walboro. (sp>?) So anyways, I siphon the fuel out, drop the tank, pull out the pump with it's brackets...And I go to put the new pump in it's "holder" and I can see that it won't fit. Is this normal? I doubt it. So I'm pretty pissed, but go on anyway and wire it up. Now the strainer (that's what it's called right?) "screen" wont go on since the pump wont fit all the way down into the bracket. F*** it I just put it in. Buttoned it all back up and turned the KOEO and got like 37psi on my Fuel gauge. So....ahhhh....Is this going to work?
The strainer I pulled off the last pump was clean as s***. Had a tiny little bit of black "gunk" but that was it. What do you guys think.? Honestly.

you should probably be alright. im not running one but ive got a carb, so my pump is on the motor and it gets filtered before it gets to the pump and afterwards. the only thing that strainer does is keep the pump from sucking crap into it and causing it to fail. i think you should be alright. id be more worried about it not fitting in the bracket correctly than anything.

This is a pic of the old pump as I pull it out... The new one's case Diameter is too large to fit in the "hanger" and thus cannot sit down enough to put the "strainer/filter/whatever" thing on...

i think it will be fine without the strainer, (i didnt have one in my '86) as long as you keep the tank clean (lol, they may not be logical). the pump should have a screen in it anyway.

but if you ever have any fuel problems, you'll know where to look.

Ya, It does have a screen filter built into the pump body.
I asked this question on the corral also, and someone told me one of his customers did this, and the pump went out after 600 miles...But honestly the old strainer was so clean...I dont think there will be much "crud" getting in the tank....I'm just going to run it, since I am so sick of messing with that damn tank. Only thing I'm worried about is If the pump were to suddenly just STOP (dosn't seem likly though) and I would be spraying the nitrous, and suddenly run very lean, and cause damage....
But the pump would "slowly die" correct? Not just STOP all of a sudden if it were to get "clogged" up?

You are asking a ton of "what if" and hypothetical questions in an attempt to psychologically reassure yourself that everything is going to be ok.

But, you know as well as any of us that the bottom line is the pump does not work/fit like it should. Going the trouble of pulling the gas tank is not something you probably are itching to do more than once, and that, coupled with the fact that you are running nitrous oxide on your motor, and that you know the consequences of an extreme lean condition while using nitrous, almost begs that you get a different/correct pump so you can use the strainer. If it were me, in the same situation on a daily driver, I would take the bus/get rides from friends as long as it took to get a different pump that would fit correctly. If it's not a daily driver, than this can definitely wait until you swap the pump.

Yeah, it might work as is. But it also might cause issues in less than 1000 miles. It's a total lottery.
